Craigellachie 13 Years Old alongside H. Upmann Connossieur No. 1
A Speyside malt with a smoky undertone, next to a Cuban corona gorda. Smoke next to smoke, with fruit in between.

From the shelf
The bottle
Craigellachie is in Speyside. This bottling is thirteen years old and stands at 46 percent by volume; the colour is light gold. The nose brings warm apples with lightly smoky touches; in the mouth fresh-sweet with barley malt, apples and mandarin, later cinnamon, tobacco and spicy oak. The finish is remarkably long, lightly smoky, with an undertone of peat.
The combination
Why this works together
The Connossieur No. 1 is a corona gorda of 143 mm: long enough to keep going at a relaxed pace, wide enough to keep its body. H. Upmann is by nature dry and woody rather than heavy. Alongside a malt that already has tobacco and smoke in its flavour, that dryness keeps the whole in balance; a sweeter cigar would drown out the fruit in the whisky.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- H. Upmann Connossieur No. 1 Cuban corona gorda of 143 mm, dry and woody, next to the smoky undertone of the whisky.
- Montecristo No. 3 Corona of 142 mm, slimmer and with more cocoa, which makes the mandarin in the whisky stand out.
- Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 1 Corona gorda of 143 mm with a sweeter woody note, closer to cinnamon in flavour.
- Davidoff Millennium Blend Robusto Robusto of 127 mm, shorter and sturdier, for those who prefer to stop sooner.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 46 percent ABV, a few drops of water bring out the apple fruit. Drink it in the pauses between puffs.
