The Hakushu Distillers Reserve alongside Cohiba Exquisitos
A fresh Japanese single malt with light peat, alongside a slim Cuban panetela. The lightest cigar size with the greenest bottle.

From the shelf
The bottle
Hakushu is a Japanese distillery. This single malt is bottled at 43 percent alcohol by volume and is light gold in colour. The nose brings mint, pine wood, freshly cut grass and cucumber, with very light peat smoke and melon, ripe pear and green apple; in the mouth the fruit shifts to yuzu, grapefruit and lemon zest, with vanilla, honey and ginger and a subtle peat smoke. The finish is long, with fruit and peat.
The combination
Why this works together
A 126 mm panetela is slim: little tobacco is involved at any one time, so the smoke stays thin and dry. Cohiba puts grass and wood underneath instead of earth. With a malt that draws its character from green, fresh notes, any wider size is too much; this one lets the grass in the glass and the grass in the tobacco stand side by side.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Cohiba Exquisitos Cuban panetela of 126 mm, slim and grassy, so that the fresh notes of Hakushu stay upright.
- La Gloria Cubana Medaille d’Or No. 4 Panetela of 152 mm, longer but just as slim a smoke.
- Rafael González Perlas Petit corona of 102 mm, short and mild, for a small moment.
- H. Upmann Coronas Junior Petit corona of 110 mm, drier and nuttier, which makes the honey stand out.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 43 percent by volume water is not needed. Drink each time after the smoke has left the mouth, so that the citrus fruit stays traceable.
