Why here

Four seasons side by side, from a release that sold out straight away

Akkeshi releases a new bottle every three months, named after one of the twenty-four seasons of the Japanese calendar. Each release exists only once and in Japan is usually sold out within a day. In the Netherlands you rarely see more than one on the shelf at a time.

We have four side by side, plus a bottle of young spirit from the New Born series and a single cask that the Scottish bottler Adelphi bought from Akkeshi. That last one is a curiosity: a Scottish house bottling a Japanese whisky. Not sure which one to choose? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The seasonal range

Four bottlings from the distillery itself

Three blends and a single malt, all at 48 or 55 percent and without exception in small batches.

About the distillery

Built to resemble Islay, on the other side of the world

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 2015Construction begins on the coast of Akkeshi on Hokkaido.
  • 2016In October the stills run for the first time.
  • 2018The first own bottling is released.
  • 2020February: the first single malt. October: the start of the seasonal series.
  • 2021As the first Japanese craft distillery with a HACCP certificate.

Akkeshi is located on Hokkaido, the northernmost of the Japanese islands, and is the easternmost distillery in the country. The small town lies by the sea, next to the swampy Bekanbeushi marshes, with a lot of sea fog and a cool, damp climate. That is no coincidence: the trading company Kenten Jitsugyo chose this spot precisely because the conditions resemble those of Islay.

Construction began in 2015, and the stills were running in October 2016. The set-up is Scottish: stills from Scotland, peated barley, and maturation in bourbon, sherry and wine casks, supplemented with mizunara, the Japanese oak. The first own bottling came in 2018, the first single malt in February 2020. That October the series that now defines the house began.

A new bottle every three months, named after one of the twenty-four seasons of the traditional calendar. Twenty-four names, twenty-four editions.

What are those 24 seasons?

The traditional East Asian calendar divides the year not into four but into twenty-four seasons of about two weeks each, with names such as ‘minor heat’, ‘great cold’ and ‘thaw’. Akkeshi names each release after such a season and tunes the composition to match. As a result, every bottle is a snapshot in time, and the same one never returns. That makes them sought after by collectors.

Two outliers

A small bottle of young spirit and a cask that made its way to the bottle via Scotland.

Frequently asked questions about Akkeshi

How much Akkeshi does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Currently 6 different bottles, all available right away. Four of them come from the distillery's own seasonal series. Those runs are small, so this changes.

Why is Akkeshi so expensive for a young whisky?

Because print runs are small and demand is high. The distillery has only existed since 2016, so the whisky is young by definition; the price comes from scarcity and the series, not from age. Anyone who finds that too much is at the wrong address with Akkeshi.

What do names like Usui, Daikan and Shosho mean?

These are names of seasons from the traditional calendar, which divides the year into twenty-four parts: thaw, great cold, lesser heat. Each Akkeshi release bears such a name and is matched to it.

Is Akkeshi peated?

Yes, the distillery was set up with Islay as its model and uses peated barley. How much smoke you taste varies by release; some are lightly peated, others distinctly smoky.

What is mizunara?

A Japanese oak species that is far more porous and harder to work than American or European oak. Casks made from it are expensive and rare. Akkeshi uses mizunara from Hokkaido, alongside bourbon, sherry and wine casks.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Akkeshi abroad?

Yes. We ship to about forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included or how many bottles fit in one shipment.
