Where this whiskey comes from
Blacks began in 2013 as a brewery of Sam and Maud Black, after a home brewing kit received as a gift. The distillery came afterwards. That also means something for what is in the bottle: the standard range is bought-in Irish whiskey that Blacks finishes and bottles itself, not its own distillate.
In December 2020, distilling began in Kinsale itself for the first time. That own distillate has since been released as a separate range. The bottles you see here belong to the sourced range, and we would rather tell you that up front than have you read it somewhere later.
The bottles we have in stock
From heavily peated to finished in casks of their own IPA.
Beer wood instead of sherry wood
- The company in brief
- 2013Founded by Sam and Maud Black.
- KinsaleOn the coast of County Cork.
- 2020First distilled on site in December.
- IPAThe cask the house is known for.
Where other Irish houses reach for sherry and port, Blacks uses its own beer casks. The Rocketship is finished in casks from their IPA of the same name, setting hop bitterness against grain sweetness. It is an approach that only works if you are brewer and distiller at once.
Black Smoke goes the other way: heavily peated Irish whiskey, a category that was long rare in Ireland. Triple Threat is a blend from bourbon, sherry and new American oak, and the Maple Mayhem is finished in casks that previously held maple syrup whiskey.
Since December 2020, the distillery’s own spirit has been maturing, single malt and single pot still, distilled in Kinsale itself. There are plans for a larger complex with a visitor centre by the harbour; these have been permitted but are not yet complete.
Brewer and distiller at once, and you can taste it in the cask.
What these bottles go with
If you mainly know Irish whiskey as smooth and sweet, the Black Smoke is a surprise, and so is the IPA finish.
Put the Rocketship next to an ordinary Irish whiskey; the difference lies almost entirely in the cask.
