A distillery you will not see on any shelf
Braeval was built to supply malt for the Chivas blends, and that is still its main task. Official bottlings are rare: the first only appeared in 2017, sold exclusively at the Chivas visitor centres. Everything you can taste from this distillery therefore comes from independent bottlers.
We have five, from six to twenty-five years. The oldest still carries the original name Braes of Glenlivet; it was changed in 1994 because the owner wanted to reserve the name Glenlivet for a single distillery. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The highest in Scotland, and the quietest
- The distillery in five moments
- 1973Chivas Brothers builds Braes of Glenlivet near Chapeltown.
- 1978Expanded to six stills.
- 1994The name becomes Braeval, to avoid confusion with The Glenlivet.
- 2002–2008Closed for six years by the new owner Pernod Ricard.
- 2017The very first official bottling is released.
Braeval stands on a ridge near Chapeltown in Banffshire, at around 350 metres altitude. That makes it the highest distillery in Scotland. The area was in fact known in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for illegal stills; Braes of Glenlivet was only the third legal distillery in the region.
When it was built in 1973, it was the most modern distillery in Scotland: everything in one open space, arranged so that a single employee can oversee the whole process. There is no malting floor of its own and no warehouse of its own. The new make goes by tanker to Chivas's central storage in Keith. The pagoda roof on the building is therefore decoration: no malting has ever been done here.
In 2002 Pernod Ricard mothballed the distillery. Six years later it reopened because demand for single malt picked up. There are no visitors: Braeval is not open to the public.

Braeval or Braes of Glenlivet?
The same distillery. Until 1994 it was called Braes of Glenlivet; the owner changed the name because he wanted to reserve the word Glenlivet for one distillery. Older bottlings therefore still carry the old name, mainly on bottles over twenty years old. When searching the webshop, search for both.
Frequently asked questions about Braeval
How many Braeval does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Five bottles, all available immediately and all from independent bottlers.
Why is there no official Braeval?
Because the distillery was built in 1973 to supply malt for the Chivas blends. Only in 2017 did a first own bottling appear, available only at the Chivas visitor centres.
Is Braeval really the highest distillery in Scotland?
It sits at about 350 metres and shares that title with Dalwhinnie; which of the two is slightly higher depends on how you measure. In any case, none stands clearly higher.
What is the difference with Braes of Glenlivet?
None. That was the name until 1994. Older bottlings still carry that name, such as the twenty-five-year-old from 1994 that we have in stock.
Does ’t Bockje also ship Braeval abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
