Why here

Smoke from Ireland, and that is rare

Anyone looking for peated whisky almost always ends up in Scotland. Connemara is the exception: the only Irish single malt with peat smoke that is widely available. For those who know Islay but not yet Ireland, or the other way round, this is the logical bridge.

We have all three bottles that appear in the Netherlands, from the Gold at 25 euro to the twelve-year-old. If you do not know which one to get, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

A potato factory that shook up Irish whiskey

  • The distillery in four moments
  • 1987John Teeling converts a factory for industrial alcohol into Cooley.
  • 1993The first peated batch is distilled.
  • the 90sConnemara is marketed as a peated Irish single malt.
  • 2011–2014Cooley passes to Beam and then to Suntory.

When John Teeling turned an industrial alcohol plant on the Cooley peninsula in County Louth into a distillery in 1987, it was the first new distillery in Ireland in well over a hundred years. Of the more than a hundred Irish distilleries of the nineteenth century, only two were left in 1970.

Teeling did two things differently from the rest of Ireland. He distilled twice instead of three times, because in his view a third round takes away too much flavour. And he brought back the peat: barley dried over a peat fire, something that was once normal in Ireland and then almost disappeared. That peated batch became Connemara.

Irish whiskey is known as smooth and triple distilled. Connemara is exactly the opposite, and that is in fact historically justified.

How smoky is Connemara?

Medium. More than a hint, but less raw than the heavy Islay whiskies. The smoke here sits on a sweet, honeyed base, which makes it more approachable than you would expect from the word ‘peated’. The Distillers Edition also has an oloroso finish, which adds more depth.

Frequently asked questions about Connemara

How much Connemara does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Three bottles, all available immediately: the Gold, the Distillers Edition and the twelve-year-old.

Is Connemara really Irish?

Yes. The whiskey comes from Cooley in County Louth. The fact that it contains peat smoke makes it unusual for Ireland, but historically it is exactly right: drying barley over a peat fire was once customary there.

Which Connemara should you try first?

The Gold is the cheapest way in. If you want more depth, the Distillers Edition with its oloroso finish is the logical step; the twelve-year-old is the most mature of the three.

Why is Connemara distilled twice?

Because Cooley believes a third distillation takes away too much flavour. Most Irish whiskey goes through the still three times, which turns out lighter. With Connemara more body is left.

How smoky is this whiskey?

Medium: clearly present, but less raw than a heavy Islay. The smoke sits on a sweet, honeyed base.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Connemara abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
