Why here

Four cask finishes for the price of a regular bottle

The Smooth range is the same blend, each time finished on a different cask: Caribbean rum, Portuguese port, Japanese mizunara oak and French wine. All four cost 27.49 euros. Anyone who wants to understand what a cask does to whisky cannot make that comparison any cheaper anywhere.

Alongside that, the standard ladder from White Label to a twenty-seven-year-old from the Double Double series. The malt behind all those bottles comes from Aberfeldy, which the family built for that purpose in 1898. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The core range

From White Label to twenty-seven years

Five bottles, including two from the Double Double series at 46 percent.

About the house

The man who put his name on the bottle

  • The house in five moments
  • 1846John Dewar opens a wine and spirits shop in Perth.
  • 1892Son Tommy sets off on a two-year trip around the world for customers.
  • 1898The brothers build Aberfeldy to be sure of malt.
  • 1899Master blender A.J. Cameron makes White Label.
  • 1998Bacardi buys John Dewar & Sons, with five distilleries.

John Dewar started a wine and spirits shop in Perth in 1846. At a time when whisky was sold from the cask, he was one of the first to bottle his own blend and put his name on it, as a guarantee of quality.

His sons made it a world brand. Tommy Dewar set off in 1892 on a two-year journey around the world to find customers, and wrote a book about it. To meet demand, the brothers built their own distillery in 1898: Aberfeldy, three kilometres from their father’s birthplace, and still the heart of every Dewar’s blend.

In 1899 the house's first master blender, A.J. Cameron, created White Label. In doing so he devised a method that has characterised the brand ever since: after blending, the whisky goes back into oak casks to mature together for a further period. This 'double maturation' makes the blend rounder and more even.

Since 1998 the house has belonged to Bacardi, with five distilleries: Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie, Macduff and Royal Brackla. We stock four of them.

What is Double Double?

An extension of double maturation to four stages: first the malt and grain whiskies mature separately, then they are combined per type and matured again, then combined together, and finally the whole goes for a period into a finishing cask. Those bottles are bottled at 46 percent instead of the usual 40.

Frequently asked questions about Dewar’s

How much Dewar’s does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Nine bottles, all available immediately: five from the core range and the complete Smooth range of four cask finishes. The eighteen-year-old is temporarily sold out.

Is Dewar’s a single malt?

No, it is a blend: malt and grain whisky from several distilleries. The malt at its heart comes from Aberfeldy, which the Dewar family built themselves in 1898.

What is double maturation?

After blending, the whisky goes back into oak casks to mature together for a further period. Master blender A.J. Cameron devised this method around 1899, and it makes the blend rounder and more even.

What is the difference between the four Smooth bottles?

Only the finishing cask differs: Caribbean rum, Portuguese port, Japanese mizunara oak or French wine. The blend underneath is the same, and all four cost the same. Ideal for tasting side by side.

Which Dewar’s is best to choose?

White Label for mixing and for weekdays. If you want to drink it neat, the twelve-year-old is the logical step; the Double Double bottles at 46 percent are the top end.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Dewar’s abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
