The Master’s Anthology is the series by whisky maker Rachel Barrie: Ode to the Valley, Ode to the Embers and Ode to the Dark. We have all three, between seventy and eighty euros. Side by side they show how far you can move within a single house.
In addition, two bottles that do not fit the GlenDronach mould: a peated version and one on port casks. For a distillery known for sherry, those are precisely the most interesting exceptions. If you are not sure which one to get, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The valley of the blackberries, guarded by rooks
- The distillery in five moments
- 1826James Allardice founds GlenDronach in the Forgue valley.
- 1960William Teacher & Sons buys the distillery.
- 1996–2002Closed down for six years.
- 2008Billy Walker buys it and restores the reputation as a sherry house.
- 2016Brown-Forman becomes the owner; Rachel Barrie becomes whisky maker.
GlenDronach lies in the Valley of Forgue near Huntly in Aberdeenshire. The name means ‘valley of the blackberries’ in Gaelic, after the thorn bushes around the site. James Allardice founded the distillery in 1826, as one of the first to apply for a licence after the Excise Act.
Where almost every distillery uses sherry casks for a finish of a few months, GlenDronach matures its whisky from start to finish in Spanish Pedro Ximénez and oloroso casks. That is more expensive and slower, but it gives the dark, full style this house is known for: dried fruit, chocolate and Christmas spices.
After a six-year closure, Billy Walker bought the distillery in 2008 and put three million pounds into buying sherry casks, into which about half of the existing stock was transferred. Since 2016 Brown-Forman has been the owner and Rachel Barrie is the whisky maker.
For almost two hundred years rooks have been trying to nest in the warehouses. The staff say: as long as the birds stay, the whisky is doing well.
Why is the twenty-one-year-old called Parliament?
Not after politics. A group of rooks is called a parliament in English, and those birds have been nesting for generations in the trees by the warehouses. The bottle is named after them. The eighteen-year-old also has a name with a story: Allardice, after the founder.

Frequently asked questions about GlenDronach
How much GlenDronach does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Fourteen bottles, all available immediately. The older twelve-year-old version is temporarily sold out.
Why is GlenDronach so dark and full?
Because the whisky is not briefly finished in sherry casks, but matures in them from start to end, in Spanish Pedro Ximénez and oloroso casks. That is more expensive and slower than a short finish, but it gives much more depth.
Which GlenDronach should you try first?
The 12 Years Old. That is the signature of the house. If you like that, the fifteen-year-old Revival is the logical next step.
Why is the twenty-one-year-old called Parliament?
A group of rooks is called a parliament in English. Those birds have nested near the distillery’s warehouses for almost two hundred years, and the bottle is named after them.
Is GlenDronach peated?
Normally not. There is, however, a Traditionally Peated, which matures peated whisky in oloroso casks, an unusual combination you rarely come across.
Does ’t Bockje also ship GlenDronach abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
