Why here

Three batches side by side, and two tasting sets

The Cask Strength comes out in numbered batches and every batch is different. We have three in a row: 7, 8 and 9, from 58.9 to 59.6 percent. Being able to put consecutive batches like these side by side is rare.

In addition, two Time Capsule sets with which you can taste different ages side by side: one in miniatures of 5 cl, one in bottles of 20 cl. For anyone who wants to discover what age does without buying three whole bottles, that is a handy setup. Not sure which one to choose? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Distilled in the Highlands, matured in the Lowlands

  • The distillery in five moments
  • around 1820George Connell distils illegally in the woods near Dumgoyne.
  • 1833He obtains a licence; the distillery is then called Burnfoot.
  • 1836The water source is leased for eight pounds a year.
  • 1905The name becomes Glengoyne.
  • 2003Ian Macleod Distillers buys the distillery.

Glengoyne lies at the foot of Dumgoyne Hill, some twenty kilometers north of Glasgow. The name means ‘valley of the wild geese’. What makes the place special: the border between the Highlands and the Lowlands runs right across the road in front of the distillery. The stills are in the Highlands, the warehouses on the other side in the Lowlands. So Highland whisky is distilled here and Lowland whisky is matured.

Two choices determine the flavour. No peat was ever found on the site, so from the start the barley was dried with warm air instead of over a peat fire. Glengoyne is entirely unpeated, and that has never changed. And the stills run exceptionally slowly: the house speaks of the slowest distillation in Scotland. The slower the vapour travels through the still, the more copper it touches and the cleaner and fruitier the spirit becomes.

The colour is not adjusted: no caramel goes in, and maturation takes place largely in sherry casks that the house has made itself and lets dry for years.

No peat, no colouring, no hurry. The house motto is ‘unhurried since 1833’.

Why is slower distilling better?

With a slow run, the alcohol vapour has more time to touch copper. Copper removes sulphur and heavy compounds from the vapour, so the more contact, the cleaner and fruitier the spirit. Fast distilling gives a heavier, meaty whisky, as with Craigellachie. Glengoyne deliberately chooses the other side: apple, pear and malty sweetness, without a trace of smoke.

Four bottles at cask strength

Frequently asked questions about Glengoyne

How many Glengoyne does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Eighteen bottles, all available immediately: the core range from ten to twenty-one years, four at cask strength, four special editions, two tasting sets and two old bottles.

Is Glengoyne peated?

No, and it has never been otherwise. Peat has never been found on the grounds, so the barley is dried with warm air instead of over a peat fire. No Glengoyne contains smoke.

What does the slowest distillation in Scotland mean?

That the stills run slower than usual. As a result the vapour touches more copper, which removes sulphur and heavy compounds and gives a clean, fruity spirit.

Which Glengoyne is best to try first?

The 12 Years Old. It is regarded as the best value for money the house has to offer. If you want more power, one of the Cask Strength batches is the logical step.

Is Glengoyne actually in the Highlands or the Lowlands?

Both. The border runs across the road in front of the distillery: the stills are in the Highlands, the warehouses on the other side in the Lowlands. So the whisky is distilled in the Highlands and matured in the Lowlands.

What is the Time Capsule?

A set of three small bottles of different ages, for tasting side by side. There is a version with 5 cl miniatures and one with 20 cl bottles.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Glengoyne abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
