Where Yamazaki is full and fruity, Hakushu is fresh and spicy, with a light smoky note. Suntory built this distillery in 1973 with exactly that aim: a second, very different malt to blend with.
We have six bottles, including the twelve- and eighteen-year-old in both the regular and the centenary edition (the latter marking one hundred years of Suntory). Japanese whisky is scarce; what is on the shelf is all there is. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

A distillery in the middle of the forest
- The distillery in brief
- 1923Suntory builds Yamazaki, the first malt distillery in Japan.
- 1973Keizo Saji builds Hakushu, fifty years later.
- HeightWell over seven hundred metres, in the Japanese Southern Alps.
- WaterMeltwater from the Kaikomagatake.
Hakushu lies in Hokuto in Yamanashi Prefecture, deep in the forest at the foot of the Kaikomagatake. Keizo Saji, Suntory's second master blender, built it in 1973, exactly half a century after Yamazaki, and deliberately in a place that differed from it as much as possible.
That choice determines the whisky. At well over seven hundred metres it is cooler and more humid than at Yamazaki, the water comes as meltwater from the mountain, and the forest around it has never been felled. The result is a malt often described as green and fresh: cucumber, mint, pine needles, with a thin layer of smoke underneath.
Japanese whisky has become scarce since the 2010s. Over the years Suntory has dropped or scaled back various releases, and the prices reflect that. What there is comes in small quantities.
One of the few distilleries in the world located at an altitude of more than seven hundred metres.
What is the Kogei Collection?
A series in which Suntory combines unusual releases with Japanese craftsmanship (kogei means arts and crafts). The bottle on this page is peated Hakushu malt that has matured in Spanish oak: two things you seldom see together at this house.
Frequently asked questions about Hakushu
How much Hakushu does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Six bottles, all available immediately: the Distiller’s Reserve, two twelve-year-olds, two eighteen-year-olds and a peated edition from the Kogei Collection.
What does Hakushu taste like?
Fresh and green: cucumber, mint and pine needles, with a light smoky note. That is deliberately different from Yamazaki, which is fuller and fruitier.
Why has Japanese whisky become so expensive?
Because of scarcity. Demand grew faster than whisky could mature, so Suntory has dropped or scaled back expressions. What there is comes onto the market in small quantities.
Which Hakushu should you try first?
The Distiller’s Reserve. It shows the fresh house style without the price of an age-statement bottle.
What is the centenary edition?
Suntory turned a hundred in 2023 and released special editions of the twelve- and eighteen-year-old for it. The eighteen-year-old from that series is at 48 percent instead of the usual 43.
Does ’t Bockje also ship Hakushu abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
