Why here

Eleven old grain whiskies side by side

Grain whisky almost always disappears into a blend. When it stays in cask for thirty years or longer, something special happens: it becomes soft, creamy and sweet in a way you do not come across with malt.

We have eleven Invergordons in stock, six of them thirty-four years or older. If you are not sure which one you need, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Fifteen to thirty-three years

Five casks from independent bottlers.

About the distillery

Columns instead of pot stills

  • Invergordon in five facts
  • 1959Invergordon Distillers is founded.
  • 1961production begins.
  • 3columns: analyser, rectifier and a column for the feints.
  • 40 millionliters of alcohol per year.
  • 1993Whyte & Mackay takes over the distillery.

Invergordon is in Easter Ross, on the Cromarty Firth north of Inverness. The distillery was set up in 1959 by a group of businessmen, partly to bring work to the area, and began production in 1961.

Unlike a malt distillery, Invergordon does not work with copper pot stills but with continuously running columns: an analyser, a rectifier and a column for the tails. This makes it possible to produce far more alcohol at once: around forty million litres a year.

Almost everything goes into blends. What ends up in the bottle as single grain comes from independent bottlers who bought an old cask. Since 1993 the distillery has been owned by Whyte & Mackay.

Forty million litres a year, and yet you rarely see a bottle of it.

Frequently asked questions about Invergordon

How much Invergordon does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Eleven different bottles, from fifteen to thirty-seven years old. All eleven are available at the moment.

What is grain whisky?

Whisky that is not made exclusively from malted barley and that is distilled in columns instead of pot stills. It is usually lighter and mostly used in blends.

Why is old grain whisky interesting?

Because grain whisky becomes very soft, creamy and sweet with long maturation. Because it is rarely bottled as a single grain, old casks are often surprisingly affordable for their age.

Does Invergordon do its own bottling?

Hardly. Almost the entire production goes into blends. What appears as single grain comes from independent bottlers.

Can I reserve a bottle and collect it in Bathmen?

That is possible. Order online and choose pickup, or call us on 0570 541 278 and we will set it aside. Pickup at Brink 2 is free.
