Why Canadians call it rye
In Canada, Canadian Whisky, Canadian Rye Whisky and Rye Whisky are legally interchangeable, and no minimum percentage of rye is prescribed. That is fundamentally different from the United States, where rye whiskey must have at least fifty-one percent rye in the mash.
That is because of the method. Canadian producers distil each grain separately and also mature it separately. A light base whisky, usually of corn, provides the volume; a rye-rich whisky distilled at a lower strength provides the flavour. The blender builds a whole from them afterwards. In Canada, rye is therefore a flavour style and an old nickname, not a recipe rule.

A name that moved along each time
- A brief history
- 1857John Philip Wiser steps into a distillery in Prescott.
- 1911Wiser dies.
- 1989The distillery in Corbyville closes.
- WindsorWhere it is made now.
In 1857 John Philip Wiser joined a distillery on the St. Lawrence in Prescott, Ontario, and later became its sole owner. Around 1900 the company was regarded as one of the largest in Canada. Wiser died in 1911.
After that the name moved along with the company’s history: first to Corbyville, and when that factory closed in 1989 to Windsor, where the maturing stock went. J.P. Wiser’s is still made there.
The law is clear about what may be called Canadian whisky: mashed, distilled and matured in Canada, at least three years in casks of at most seven hundred litres, and at least forty percent. The Triple Barrel makes the blending principle visible by playing the same game with three types of cask: new oak, ex-bourbon and refilled Canadian casks.
Here, rye is a style, not a recipe rule.
What these bottles go with
Canadian whisky is generally softer and smoother than American. Pleasant neat, with ice or in a cocktail.
The eighteen-year-old shows what long maturation with that blending method does; a good next step after the ten-year-old.
