Why here

Advocaat from the city where the story begins

Advocaat is an egg liqueur based on brandy: egg yolk, sugar and brandy, processed into a thick yellow drink. European rules require at least 140 grams of quality egg yolk and at least 150 grams of sugar or honey per litre, and a minimum of 14 percent alcohol by volume. If an egg drink does not reach that threshold, it may not be called advocaat.

There are two versions. The thick one is made only with egg yolks and is so syrupy that you eat it with a small spoon. The thin one is made with the whole egg, is pourable and lighter in colour; that variant is mainly made for export.

Cooymans Advocaat Original is the thick one, for eating with a spoon. The label says 14 percent alcohol. We have two of them: the 70 centilitre bottle and the 50 centilitre one. The only difference between them is the quantity.

About the house

From a bakery on the Postelstraat to a liqueur distillery

  • The house in brief
  • 1798Johannes Gerardus Cooymans is born in Mook, the son of a baker.
  • 1828He gives up his bakery and starts a trade in drinks of his own making.
  • 1845The liqueur maker is being expanded with a distillery.
  • 1849With his son Adrianus he founds the firm J.G. Cooymans & Zoon.

Johannes Gerardus Cooymans is born on 19 June 1798 in Mook, the son of a baker. He goes to work as a baker’s assistant in ’s-Hertogenbosch and around 1825 starts a bakery of his own there on the Postelstraat.

In his spare time he makes liqueurs and herbal bitters according to his own recipes. The Bossche Encyclopedie calls him the first to experiment with eggs and brandy, and thus the inventor of advocaat. His name as a maker of convivial drinks grows so big in and around Den Bosch that in 1828 he sells his bakery and drapery business and switches to a trade in drinks of his own making.

In 1845 he expands the liqueur distillery with a distillery. Four years later, together with his son Adrianus, he founds the firm J.G. Cooymans & Zoon.

He is also the first to experiment with eggs and brandy, and so becomes the inventor of the world-famous advocaat. (Bossche Encyclopedie)

70 or 50 centilitres?

The contents of the bottle are the only difference between the two. It is the same Cooymans Advocaat Original, with, according to the label, 14 percent alcohol and the Netherlands as country of origin.

Frequently asked questions about Cooymans

Which Cooymans does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Two bottles of Cooymans Advocaat Original, both available immediately: one of 70 centilitres and one of 50 centilitres.

What exactly is advocaat?

An egg liqueur on a brandy base, made from egg yolk, sugar and brandy. The European rules require at least 140 grams of quality egg yolk and at least 150 grams of sugar or honey per litre, and a minimum of 14 percent alcohol by volume.

Is Cooymans a thick or a thin advocaat?

The Advocaat Original is the thick version: syrupy enough to eat with a small spoon. Thin advocaat is made with the whole egg and is pourable; that one is on our shelf under a different brand.

How much alcohol is in Cooymans advocaat?

Fourteen percent, according to the label of both bottles.

Where does the name Cooymans come from?

From Johannes Gerardus Cooymans, born in Mook in 1798 as the son of a baker. He started a bakery in s-Hertogenbosch, also made liqueurs and in 1849 founded the firm J.G. Cooymans en Zoon with his son Adrianus.

Is Cooymans the inventor of advocaat?

The Bossche Encyclopedie writes that Johannes Gerardus Cooymans was the first to experiment with eggs and brandy and so made advocaat. Other sources place the origin with Dutch colonists who imitated a Portuguese-Brazilian drink made from avocado with egg yolk.
