Why here

Exactly on the limit the law sets

Advocaat is an egg liqueur based on brandy: egg yolk, sugar and brandy, worked into a thick yellow drink. The European rules require at least 140 grams of quality egg yolk and at least 150 grams of sugar or honey per litre, and a minimum of 14 percent alcohol by volume. If an egg drink falls below that, it is not called advocaat but, for example, tokkelroom.

There are two versions. For thick advocaat only the egg yolks are used; it is so syrupy that it is not drunk but eaten with a small spoon, often with a dollop of whipped cream. For the thin version the whole egg goes in, making the liqueur pourable and lighter in colour. Thin advocaat is made mainly for export.

De Zwarte Kip is 14 percent on the label, and so falls within the advocaat definition. In the 50-centilitre bottle, it is one of the better-known Dutch names on the shelf.

Where does the word advocaat come from?

Two explanations exist side by side. The first links the name to the lawyer in the courtroom: the drink was supposed to lubricate the throat and promote talkativeness. The second, considered the most obvious, derives the word from the French avocat and the Spanish aguacate: avocado. A drink similar in substance to advocaat can be made from the flesh of that fruit; the Warninks brand maintains that Dutch colonists imitated that drink at home and used egg yolk for it.

About the brand

A regional name from an Amsterdam house

  • Lucas BolsThe house that carries Zwarte Kip among its regional brands.
  • AmsterdamWhere Lucas Bols has its head office.
  • 14%The minimum that European rules set for advocaat.
  • 140 gThe minimum amount of quality egg yolk per litre of advocaat.

Zwarte Kip is listed at Lucas Bols in the brand overview, in the group of regional brands. Lucas Bols is an Amsterdam distiller of genever and liqueur, headquartered on the Paulus Potterstraat. Since the takeover by Nolet in 2024 the company is no longer listed on the stock exchange.

We found no source we could verify about the origin of the brand name itself. What is certain is on the label: the Netherlands as country of origin, 50 centilitres, 14 percent alcohol.

That puts the Zwarte Kip within the European definition of advocaat. That requires at least 140 grams of quality egg yolk and at least 150 grams of sugar or honey per litre, and a minimum of 14 percent alcohol by volume.
