Various grape varieties: what that means on a label
The label line on this bottle names no single grape, but says various grape varieties. That is not sloppiness but a designation: the wine is a blend of several grapes, and the proportions can differ per batch.
In winemaking, such a blend is called a cuvée. It gives the maker room to adjust with each harvest so that the bottle stays roughly the same year after year. The downside is that you cannot see on the label what is in it.
It also says Germany as the country, 75 centilitres and 0 percent alcohol. The region is not stated.

De-alcoholized: what literally happens
- This bottle in four facts
- GermanyThe country on the label entry.
- Various grapesWhat is on it instead of a grape name.
- 75 clThe bottle size.
- 0%The alcohol percentage on the label line.
De-alcoholized means that the alcohol has been removed. That is only possible if there was alcohol in it first, so this bottle starts out as ordinary wine: harvesting grapes, pressing and fermenting, during which yeast converts the sugar into alcohol.
Once the wine is finished, the alcohol is removed. In winemaking this is done in three ways. Vacuum distillation lowers the pressure in the tank, so the alcohol evaporates at a low temperature instead of at 78 degrees. Reverse osmosis forces the wine under pressure through a membrane that lets alcohol and water through but holds back colour, sugar and flavour compounds. In the spinning cone column the wine runs as a thin film over rapidly rotating cones; first the volatile aromas are captured, then the alcohol, and at the end the aromas go back into the wine.
Which of those three was used for Winfree, we have not found in any source. We therefore only write down what is stated.
De-alcoholising is only possible if the alcohol was in it first.
Why does it sometimes say 0.0 and sometimes 0.5 percent?
In the European wine rules, dealcoholised wine is a category of its own, with a ceiling of 0.5 percent alcohol. Everything below that falls under it. If it contains more, but less than the regular version of the same wine, it is called partially dealcoholised.
The number on the bottle therefore only says how far below that ceiling the producer comes out. 0.0 percent is well below it, 0.5 percent is right up against it. This label line says 0 percent.
If you want to know exactly what is on the bottle itself, give us a call. We take it off the shelf and read it out to you.

Frequently asked questions about Winfree
Which Winfree does ’t Bockje have in stock?
One bottle: Winfree De-Alcoholized White Wine, 75 centilitres, available immediately.
What does De-Alcoholized on the label mean?
Dealcoholised. Ordinary wine was made first, with fermentation and therefore with alcohol, and that alcohol was then removed again.
What does various grape varieties on the label mean?
That the wine is a blend of several grapes, a cuvée, rather than a single-grape wine. Which grapes these are is not stated.
How is the alcohol removed?
In winemaking by vacuum distillation, reverse osmosis or a spinning cone column. Which technique was used for this bottle, we have not found in any source.
Why does it say 0.0 percent and not 0.5 percent?
0.5 percent is the legal ceiling for dealcoholised wine. 0.0 percent means the producer stays well below that.
