Why here

A Scandinavian spirit, distilled in Alsace

Aquavit belongs to Scandinavia. That makes this bottle special: it comes from Steige, in the Villé valley in Alsace, where the Nusbaumer family has been distilling since 1947. It is an aquavit built in the same way as the Scandinavian ones, with caraway in the lead, but made by hand and with the stills of a French fruit distillery.

We have one on the shelf, in the 50 centilitre bottle, 45 percent. If you only know the Danish classics, this is the bottle that shows the category is broader.

If you would like to know whether more is coming from this house, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the house

Distillerie Jos. Nusbaumer in Steige

  • The house in four facts
  • 1947Joseph Nusbaumer starts the distillery.
  • SteigeThe village in the Villé valley in Alsace.
  • CopperIt is distilled in copper stills.
  • 3 weeksThat is how long the caraway seeds and spices steep before distilling.

Aquavit is the Scandinavian spirit based on grain or potato, flavoured with herbs and spices; under European rules the predominant flavour must come from a distillate of caraway seed and/or dill seed. That this spirit is also made in Alsace is what makes this bottle interesting.

Distillerie Jos. Nusbaumer is on the Grand Rue in Steige, in the Villé valley. Joseph Nusbaumer started the house in 1947. Distilling is done in copper stills, and besides fruit brandies the house also makes herbal liqueurs, gins and, therefore, aquavit.

The Aptekarsky is made by steeping caraway seed and other spices in neutral alcohol for three weeks. It is then distilled, reduced with spring water from Steige and cold-filtered. Besides caraway, the maker names anise, dill, fennel, coriander and rhubarb in the flavour profile.

The name refers to Aptekarsky Island near Saint Petersburg, in Russian the Apothecary Island, where Russia’s oldest botanical garden is located.

Caraway up front, but distilled in the stills of an Alsatian fruit distillery.

Akvavit or aquavit: where do these spellings come from?

The name goes back to the Latin aqua vitae, water of life. That is the same source as the French eau de vie and the Gaelic uisce beatha, from which our word whisky comes. From that one Latin name came the forms you see used interchangeably: akvavit in Danish and Swedish, akevitt in Norwegian, and aquavit in English, German, French and Dutch. The same drink, a different language.

The oldest known mention is in a letter from 1531 by Eske Bille, lord of Bergenshus Castle in Norway, to the Archbishop of Norway.

Country of origin: France. Contents: 50 centilitres. Alcohol: 45 percent. Data from the label information in our webshop, which matches what the maker states.
