About this bottle

Abdij St-Sixtus Westvleteren mixdoos 24 flessen contains twelve bottles of Westvleteren 12 and twelve bottles of Westvleteren 8, 24 Belgian Trappist beers of 33 centilitres in total from the Sint-Sixtus Abbey in Westvleteren. Both beers are unfiltered, unpasteurised and undergo a second fermentation in the bottle.

The abbey stands on the Donkerstraat in Westvleteren, a sub-municipality of Vleteren in the West Flemish Westhoek, and is not open to the public. The monks sell their beer only at the abbey itself, in wooden crates of 24 bottles after an online reservation, and in smaller quantities at the visitor centre In de Vrede. Since 1945 the abbey has deliberately brewed no more than is needed to sustain the community. As a result the beer is hard to find outside Westvleteren.

400 grams of cheese in three or four varieties
200 grams of dry sausage
100 grams of olives
1 baguette
100 grams of nuts
2 tablespoons of mustard

Method

Take the cheese and sausage out of the fridge half an hour beforehand.
Cut the cheese into slices or cubes, the sausage into thin slices and the baguette into slices.
Put everything on a board with the olives, the nuts and a small bowl of mustard.

Method

Take the cheese out of the fridge about an hour before serving; that brings out the flavour best.
Only cut or break the cheese just before serving.

12 bitterballen
mustard

Method

Heat the frying oil to 180 °C.
Fry the bitterballen for 4 to 5 minutes until golden brown and piping hot all the way through.
Drain on kitchen paper and serve immediately with mustard.
