About La Trappe
Since 1884 beer has been brewed within the walls of a Trappist abbey in Berkel-Enschot, near Tilburg: the Abdij Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven. All La Trappe beer comes from that brewery, Bierbrouwerij De Koningshoeven.
The brewery’s history has a few twists. From 1969 to 1980 brewing was licensed to Brouwerij Artois, after which the monks took it up themselves again. Since 1999 a subsidiary of Bavaria has handled the day-to-day running; the buildings and installations are rented from the abbey.
That arrangement led to a dispute with the International Trappist Association. On 1 December 1999 the Authentic Trappist Product logo disappeared from the labels. After new agreements, La Trappe was allowed to use the logo again from 9 September 2005, and that has remained so ever since.
The range runs from Blond (6.5 percent) and Dubbel (7 percent) via Isid'or (7.5 percent) and Tripel (8 percent) to Quadrupel (10 percent). The odd one out is the Witte Trappist, a witbier made by Trappists. The brewing water comes from the abbey’s own deep wells, and the spent grain left over after brewing goes as feed to the abbey’s cattle.

Blond beer: light in colour, not in strength

Blond says something about the colour, not the alcohol content. A Belgian blond is often six to seven per cent and drinks more easily than those figures suggest.
What you taste is usually a light malt sweetness with a fruity, spicy note from the yeast and a dry finish. For those used to pilsner, blond is the most pleasant first step towards speciality beer.
Serve it at around six to eight degrees in a goblet.
Blond refers to the colour, not the strength. Six to seven per cent is quite normal.
