Trappistes Rochefort comes from the abbey of Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy, near the town of Rochefort in the Belgian province of Namur. The abbey was founded around 1230. Around 1595 a brewery within the walls is mentioned for the first time. After the French Revolution the abbey was closed and demolished; only in 1887 did monks come to live there again, from Achel.

The monks follow the Rule of Benedict: pray and work. The brewery exists to support the community. The water comes from the Tridaine spring. Before the beer leaves the abbey, it is tasted every Friday, with a monk present.

The Authentic Trappist Product label was introduced in 1997 by the International Trappist Association and sets three requirements: the beer is brewed within or close to the abbey, it is done under the supervision of the monks, and the proceeds go to the community and to good causes. Rochefort meets these.

The numbers on the labels come from an old Belgian measure of wort density, formerly used for beer excise duty. The higher the number, the heavier the beer. Triple Extra is the youngest beer of the four.

Four beers, one abbey, one source. The number on the label tells you how strong the bottle is.

Frequently asked questions

How many beers from Rochefort does ’t Bockje have?

Four: the 6, the 8, the 10 and Triple Extra. All four in 33-centilitre bottles, from 1.64 to 2.72 euros.

Where does this beer come from?

From the abbey of Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy near Rochefort, in the Belgian province of Namur. It is brewed within the abbey walls; the first mention of a brewery there dates from around 1595.

Is Rochefort a genuine Trappist?

Yes. The beers carry the Authentic Trappist Product label. This means they are brewed within or close to the abbey, under the supervision of the monks, and that the proceeds go to the community and to charity.

What do the numbers 6, 8 and 10 stand for?

For an old Belgian measure of wort density, formerly used for beer excise duty. The higher the number, the stronger the beer: the 6 is 7.5 percent alcohol, the 8 is 9.2 and the 10 is 11.3.

What is Trappistes Rochefort Triple Extra?

The fourth and youngest beer of the abbey, with 8.1 percent alcohol. For a long time the 6, the 8 and the 10 were the entire range.
