A distillate of beer instead of fruit
On this shelf, nearly everything is made from fruit or grape residues. The Arend Oak Distilled is the exception: it starts with beer. The French call such a drink eau-de-bière, literally beer water, by analogy with eau-de-vie.
The base is Arend Tripel, a blond top-fermented beer from Brouwerij De Ryck. That beer is distilled at Stokerij De Moor in Aalst and then matured on toasted oak chips. That maturation gives the spirit its copper color; most bottles on this shelf are in fact clear.
It is a limited, numbered edition in a bottle with gold printing. We have one in stock.

What is an eau-de-bière?
With beer the fermentation work is already done: malt has been fermented into a drink of about eight percent. When that beer is distilled, the malt base and the yeast character remain recognizable, while the alcohol ends up much higher. An eau-de-bière is therefore closer to whisky than to a fruit distillate, with the difference that a finished beer goes in rather than wort.
A brewery and a distillery together
- The bottle at a glance
- De RyckThe brewery in Herzele behind the Arend brand.
- Arend TripelThe beer that forms the base.
- De MoorThe distillery in Aalst that does the distilling.
- OakMatured on charred oak chips.
Arend is the beer brand of brewery De Ryck in Herzele in East Flanders. Under that name a blonde, a dubbel, a tripel and a winter beer appear. The brewery celebrated its 135th anniversary in 2021.
For the Oak Distilled, the brewery worked with Stokerij De Moor in Aalst. It distilled the Arend Tripel and oversaw the maturation in wood. The same wood treatment is also behind the beer Arend Oak.
The result is a drink with a copper colour, which stands out on a shelf where almost everything is clear. Ageing on charred oak is what gives that colour and the wood character.
Why is a beer distillate on this shelf?
Because the category eau de vie, obstler and slivovitz is where we place distilled drinks that do not fit one of the fixed boxes. Marc, kirsch, palinka, pisco and bagaceira are there, and so is this eau-de-bière. What they share is that the raw material is the story, not the ageing or the brand.
Who is this bottle for?
This bottle is interesting if you know beer well and want to taste what remains of a tripel after distillation, or if you come from the whisky side and are curious about a malt distillate with a different background.
It is a limited, numbered edition, so what is there is there. Call if you want to know how many are left.
