Why here

A vanished London craft

For centuries London was not the place where rum was distilled, but where it was blended. Around the West India Docks there were dozens of blending houses that bought casks from the Caribbean and made their own composition from them. That trade disappeared in the twentieth century.

Charles Merser & Co. picks up that thread again: rum from Barbados, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Panama is blended in London and then rests in cask for a number of months. No added sugar or coloring. Behind the company is the Hayman family, also known for Hayman’s gin.

About the house

Distilled in the Caribbean, made in London

  • The house in brief
  • 4Countries in the blend.
  • LondonWhere it is blended and re-matured.
  • HaymanThe family behind it.
  • No sugarNothing added after blending.

The West India Docks were where rum from the colonies entered Europe. The blending houses around them were small, and their name was only as good as their latest batch. When the market for small-scale quality rum collapsed, they disappeared.

Merser calls itself the first London blending house in over a hundred years. It works with aged rum from four countries, blends it in London and then lets the whole rest in cask for a while before bottling.

The Hayman family has been in the London drinks trade for generations; they used to buy rum from the docks themselves to make their own blends.

The craft lay not in distilling, but in blending.
