What is added sugar in rum?

In the European Union, rum may contain at most 20 grams of sweetener per litre, expressed as invert sugar, and only to round off the taste. How much sugar may there be in rum?

At most 20 grams of sweetener per litre, expressed as invert sugar.

Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/787 states under category 1 that rum may be sweetened to round off the taste, but that the end product may not contain more than 20 grams of sweetener per liter. In a bottle of 70 centiliters, that upper limit comes to 14 grams. The limit applies to all rum placed on the market in the European Union, even if it was distilled outside Europe.

Why do producers add sugar to rum?

The regulation names only one permitted reason: rounding off the taste.

Beyond that Annex I leaves no room, because flavouring is excluded for rum and colouring is allowed only with caramel. Anyone who wants to know what else is in the bottle can look for the additional term traditionnel. Regulation (EU) 2019/787 links that term to distillation below 90 percent, to at least 225 grams of volatile substances per hectolitre of pure alcohol and to a ban on sweetening.

Can you tell from the label how much sugar it contains?

Regulation (EU) 2019/787 does not require the amount of sweetener to be stated on the label.

The regulation does set the upper limit, but does not require stating the actual content. Anyone who wants more certainty can look at designations that rule out sweetening, such as traditionnel, or at origin rules that are stricter than the European minimum. The designation Jamaica Rum is the clearest example of that.

Which rums may contain no sugar at all?

Rum under the protected designation Jamaica Rum may contain only filtered water and caramel after distillation.

The product specification of Jamaica Rum excludes any other addition; the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office confirmed that on 2 October 2024. The additional term traditionnel is also linked to a ban on sweetening in Regulation (EU) 2019/787. Outside such cases, the European allowance of 20 grams per litre remains.

What is the difference between sweetening and flavouring?

Sweetening adds sugar within a fixed limit, whereas flavouring adds flavourings and is prohibited for rum.

Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/787 expressly states for category 1 that rum may not be flavoured. A spiced or flavoured variant therefore does not fall under the rum category and has to be named differently. Sweetening up to 20 grams per litre remains permitted, provided the purpose is to round off the flavour.

Short answer

Short answers to related questions

Is spiced rum the same as rum?
No. Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/787 prohibits flavouring in rum, so a spiced variant falls outside the rum category.
How much is 20 grams per liter in a 70 centiliter bottle?
Fourteen grams. That is the legal upper limit and not the actual content.
May whisky be sweetened?
No. Annex I permits only caramel for colour in whisky, besides water.
Does the limit of 20 grams also apply outside Europe?
The regulation applies to rum that is placed on the market in the European Union, wherever it was distilled. Other countries have their own rules.
Why is caramel allowed?
Caramel is mentioned in Annex I for color correction. It is the only coloring permitted for rum.
