Why here

Rum made in the Netherlands

Almost all rum you buy in the Netherlands was distilled elsewhere and at most bottled here. Zuidam does it differently: the molasses goes into fermentation in Baarle-Nassau and comes out again there as a bottle. There are only a few of those in Europe.

It is fermented for two weeks with two yeast strains and distilled three times in copper pot stills, the way you would normally make whisky, not rum. From the same house we also carry Millstone whisky and Zuidam gin.

About the distillery

A family business on the Belgian border

  • The house in brief

  • MillstoneThe whisky from the same house.

Zuidam started in 1975 in Baarle-Nassau, the village that lies half in the Netherlands and half in Belgium. The sons Patrick and Gilbert are now at the helm. The house makes genever, liqueur, gin, whisky and rum, all on the same scale: small.

The rum is made from pure sugarcane molasses, fermented for two weeks at low temperature and triple-distilled in handmade copper pot stills to around eighty percent.

After that it goes into cask in the Netherlands: continental climate, so slow maturation and little evaporation. The Special Batch bottles then get a further period on port, Amarone or sherry casks.

From molasses to bottle, all in Baarle-Nassau.

Where best to start

The No. 3 is the base: this is the rum as the house intends it, without an extra cask on top.

Want to know what a sherry cask does to rum? Put the seven-year PX next to the ten- or twelve-year oloroso. Same rum, different cask.
