Kilkerran 12 Year Old alongside Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story
A Campbeltown malt alongside a short Dominican perfecto. The dry pepper in the finish of the whisky is the hinge here.

From the shelf
The bottle
Kilkerran comes from the Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown and is bottled by the house itself. This twelve-year-old matured for about seventy percent in bourbon casks and thirty percent in sherry casks, and is bottled at 46% ABV. The finish is long and dry with pepper, against a sweetish background of vanilla.
The combination
Why this works together
The Short Story has a Cameroon wrapper, which gives a sweetish spiciness rather than sharp pepper. The dry pepper is therefore in the glass and not in the cigar, so the two complement each other instead of doubling the same note. The perfecto format tapers at both ends: the cigar smokes more concentrated at first and then opens up.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story Short Dominican perfecto under a Cameroon wrapper; sweetish spiciness set against the dry pepper of the malt.
- Arturo Fuente Hemingway Signature The same blend in a longer perfecto, for those who sit for more than half an hour.
- Oliva Serie G Nicaraguan cigar, also with a Cameroon wrapper, medium in strength and widely available.
- Davidoff Nicaragua Short Corona Short size with Nicaraguan tobacco; peppier than the Fuentes and therefore the strongest of this group.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 46 percent ABV, a few drops of water can bring out the vanilla without the pepper disappearing. Taste first without smoke and then drink between puffs.
