Tamdhu 12 Years Old alongside Quai d’Orsay No. 54
A Speyside malt on sherry oak alongside a thick, restrained Cuban. Sweet cask against cedar and wood.

From the shelf
The bottle
Tamdhu is in Speyside. This bottling is twelve years old and is bottled at 43% ABV. The nose recalls a fresh cinnamon roll with sugar glaze, with sweet oak and a hint of mint; on the palate silky smooth with banana, malt biscuits and the depth of sherry oak. The finish is long and balanced, with ground spices, dried fruit and a touch of peat smoke.
The combination
Why this works together
The No. 54 is short and thick at 135 mm. Quai d’Orsay is the restrained one among the Cuban houses: cedar and flowers instead of earth and pepper. That restrained tone does not clash with the sherry oak of Tamdhu, but does put a dry layer of wood alongside it, so that the sweetness does not linger.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Quai d’Orsay No. 54 Cuban robusto extra of 135 mm, cedar and wood, restrained enough not to crowd out the sweetness of the sherry.
- Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 1 Corona gorda of 143 mm, milder and longer, with the same soft wood tone.
- Montecristo Petit Edmundo Petit robusto of 110 mm, thick but short, with cocoa against the dried fruit.
- Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, drier and nuttier, as a counterweight to the cask.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 43 percent ABV water is usually not needed. Drink each time after the smoke has left the mouth, so that the spices in the finish remain traceable.
