Why here

Eighteen Indian bottles instead of one

Most shops stock the Fusion and nothing else from India. We have the whole house: the regular single malt, two cask-strength versions, four bottles from the Single Malts of India series, a rye whisky and an eight-year-old Greedy Angels of which we have exactly one left.

There are also two bottles among them that were bottled in Scotland: a Raw Cask from Blackadder and a blend from Adelphi that contains two casks of Amrut. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Why a four-year-old Amrut tastes like a much older Scotch

  • The house in four moments
  • 1948J.N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale starts the company in Bangalore.
  • 2004The first Indian single malt is presented in Glasgow.
  • 2010Amrut Fusion receives broad international recognition and the category is established.
  • nowStill family-owned, now in the third generation of the Jagdale family.

Amrut Distilleries was founded in 1948 by J.N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale in Bangalore, the year after Indian independence. For decades the company made drinks for the domestic market; distilling malt whisky from barley only began later, and it initially went into blends.

In 2004 the company made a striking decision: the first Indian single malt was not launched in India but in Glasgow, in Scotland itself. That was a statement, and it worked. The company is still owned by the Jagdale family, now in the third generation.

In Bangalore about twelve percent evaporates from the cask every year, compared with two percent in Scotland. A four-year-old Amrut therefore has the wood depth of a much older Scotch whisky.

Why is there no age statement on the bottle?

Because age means something different in India. The distillery lies at about 900 metres altitude in a warm climate, so the whisky matures much faster and much more evaporates: the so-called angels’ share. Hence also the name Greedy Angels for the older bottlings: from that eight-year-old a good part has vanished from the cask each year. A year on the label would confuse rather than help here.

Frequently asked questions about Amrut

How much Amrut does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Currently 18 different bottles, of which 17 are immediately available; the Peated Single Malt is temporarily sold out. In addition there are two bottles that were distilled at Amrut but bottled in Scotland.

Which Amrut should you try first?

The Amrut Indian Single Malt or the Fusion. The Fusion is the best known of the house and combines Indian barley with peated Scottish barley. If you want something gentler, the Raj Igala at 40 percent is the softest way in.

Why is there no age on most bottles?

Because whisky matures about three times as fast in the climate of Bangalore as in Scotland, with around twelve percent evaporation per year. An age would give a distorted picture: a young Amrut tastes like a much older Scotch whisky.

What is the difference between Amrut Fusion and the regular single malt?

The regular single malt is made entirely from Indian barley. For Fusion, peated Scottish barley is added to it, distilled separately and then blended in, which gives a layer of smoke. Fusion is also higher in strength: 50 against 46 percent.

What does Greedy Angels mean?

A reference to the angels' share: the whisky that evaporates during maturation. In India that share is much larger than in Scotland, so little is left of an older Amrut. The name is a wink at that loss.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Amrut abroad?

Yes. We ship to about forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included or how many bottles fit in one shipment.
