Why here

From new make to ten years, from 46 to almost 74 percent

Few distilleries can be followed from start to finish as well as this one. With us, the unaged spirit stands next to the three-year-old Identity, the five- and ten-year-olds, and three Intense bottlings that come undiluted from the cask, up to 73.7 percent. That is the strongest bottle we stock. Tasted side by side, you can taste exactly what the cask and time do.

Mind the size: all bottles are 50 cl, not 70. That makes the price on the label look more favourable than it is per litre. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The core range

From three to ten years

Five bottles at 46 or 50 percent, all unpeated, uncoloured and not chill-filtered.

About the distillery

Scottish stills on a Walloon farm

  • The distillery in four moments
  • 2004Etienne Bouillon starts with two partners; the first cask is sealed in October.
  • 2007The first fully Belgian single malt appears.
  • 2010Two stills from 1898 come over from the Scottish Caperdonich.
  • 2024The twentieth anniversary, with its own anniversary bottling.

Belgian Owl comes from Fexhe-le-Haut-Clocher near Liège, on a seventeenth-century farm in the middle of the barley fields of Haspengouw. Etienne Bouillon started there in 2004 with two partners; in 2007 the first fully Belgian single malt appeared. He chose the owl as a symbol of the knowledge you need to make good whisky.

Everything here revolves around the barley. Six farmers in the immediate area grow it on some sixty hectares, and the company pays many times the world market price for it. According to Bouillon, forty percent of the character of this whisky lies in that grain.

In 2010 he bought two copper stills from 1898 from the closed Scottish distillery Caperdonich in Rothes, and had them shipped to Belgium. That had never been done before: Scottish stills that carry on in a Belgian farm.

In spring 2026 it became known that the company was going into liquidation and that the assets, including more than 3,500 casks, were being offered for sale. What has happened since, we do not know; feel free to ask us for the latest status.

Why are the bottles 50 cl?

Belgian Owl bottles as standard in half-litre bottles instead of the usual 70 cl. If you convert to the litre, these whiskies are therefore priced higher than the amount on the label suggests. Good to know if you set them next to a Scottish bottle.

Undiluted from the cask

Four bottles at cask strength, including the strongest we have in the shop.

Frequently asked questions about Belgian Owl

How many Belgian Owl does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Fourteen bottles, all available immediately. The Evolution is temporarily sold out.

Why are the bottles 50 cl instead of 70?

That is the fixed bottle size of this distillery. Keep that in mind when you compare prices with Scotch whisky: calculated per litre, Belgian Owl is higher than the label suggests.

Which Belgian Owl is best to try first?

The Identity or the five-year-old. If you want to understand straight away what maturation does, add the New Make: it is the same distillate, but without a cask.

What is New Make?

The distillate as it comes out of the still, before it goes into the cask. Formally that is not whisky, because for that it must mature for at least three years. It is instructive to taste, though, to learn what the cask adds later.

Is it true that Belgian Owl uses Scottish stills?

Yes. In 2010 the distillery bought two copper stills from 1898 from the closed Caperdonich distillery in Speyside and had them transported to Belgium.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Belgian Owl abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
