Why here

Six Royal Salutes alongside the entire core range

Royal Salute is the top end of Chivas: a blend that is always at least twenty-one years old. We have six of them, including a peated version and two twenty-six-year-olds finished on Scottish oak and on amarone. They rarely stand together in a single shop.

In addition the complete permanent range from twelve to twenty-five years, and six bottles from the Extra series in which a different cask makes the difference each time: rye, oloroso, cognac and Japanese mizunara oak. If you do not know which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the house

From grocery shop to the first luxury whisky

  • The house in five moments
  • 1801The shop from which Chivas Brothers originates opens in Aberdeen.
  • 1843James Chivas receives a royal warrant and supplies Queen Victoria.
  • 1909Chivas Regal is launched as a twenty-five-year-old: the first luxury blend.
  • 1950Strathisla in Keith is bought and becomes the home of the brand.
  • 1953Royal Salute is released for the coronation of Elizabeth II.

On the neck of every bottle it says ‘Established 1801, Aberdeen’. That refers not to a distillery but to a grocery shop: the brothers John and James Chivas sold luxury foods there to a well-to-do clientele. When that clientele asked for fuller, softer whisky, they started blending it themselves.

In 1909 the house released a twenty-five-year-old blend for the American market. That was unheard of: whisky of that age barely existed, and Chivas Regal is therefore considered the first luxury whisky. After the Second World War the brand returned as a twelve-year-old, because stocks of old whisky had dried up.

The home of the brand is Strathisla in Keith, bought in 1950 and the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Highlands. Its malt forms the core of the blend.

Royal Salute was launched on 2 June 1953, the day of the coronation of Elizabeth II, and is named after the twenty-one-gun salute. That is why every bottle is at least twenty-one years old.

What exactly is a blend?

A composition of single malts from several distilleries, combined with grain whisky. At Chivas Regal there is an age on the bottle, and it applies to the youngest whisky in the composition: in the twelve-year-old everything is therefore at least twelve years old. That makes such an age statement on a blend a stricter promise than it seems at first glance.

The Extra range: six cask finishes

Rye, oloroso, cognac and Japanese oak. The same style, each time a different cask as the final step.

Frequently asked questions about Chivas Regal

How much Chivas Regal does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Seventeen bottles, all available immediately: five from the core range, six from the Extra range and six from the Royal Salute range.

Is Chivas Regal a single malt?

No, it is a blend: single malts from several distilleries combined with grain whisky. The core comes from Strathisla in Keith, the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Highlands.

What does 1801 on the bottle mean?

The year in which the shop opened in Aberdeen from which Chivas Brothers emerged. That was a grocery, not a distillery; the blending came later.

What is Royal Salute?

Chivas's luxury range, released on the coronation day of Elizabeth II in 1953 and named after the twenty-one-gun salute. Every bottle is therefore at least twenty-one years old.

Which Chivas Regal is best to choose?

The twelve-year-old for everyday use. If you want to go a step further, the eighteen-year-old is the logical choice. The Extra bottles are interesting if you want to taste what a cask does: the same style, each time a different finish.
