Why here

Five casks from before the closure

Glen Keith stood idle for fourteen years. Every bottle older than twenty-six years was therefore distilled before the doors closed in 1999, and that stock is not replenished. We have five, from twenty-six to thirty-two years, including a twenty-nine-year-old on first fill PX sherry.

For those who would rather not spend hundreds of euros: there is also a nine-year-old from Hart Brothers for fifty-nine euros. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Two bottles to get acquainted

A nine-year-old from after the reopening and a twenty-one-year-old from the distillery itself.

About the distillery

Seagram’s tasting lab

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 1957Seagram builds Glen Keith in an old corn mill, right behind Strathisla.
  • the 60sIt is distilled three times, unusual for Speyside.
  • 1970Scotland’s first gas-fired stills.
  • 1999The distillery is shut down.
  • 2013After a complete refurbishment it will reopen.

Glen Keith is in the town of Keith, right behind Strathisla, and was built in 1957 by Seagram in an old corn mill. It was the first new distillery in Speyside since the whisky crisis of 1898 (sixty years without new construction).

From the start this was more than an ordinary distillery: it became Seagram's test lab. Distillation took place three times instead of twice, which happened almost nowhere in Speyside. Trials were carried out with wheat instead of barley, with its own yeast strains and with heavily peated batches that appeared under the names Glenisla and Craigduff. And in 1970 Glen Keith became the first distillery in Scotland to get gas-fired stills.

In 1999 the distillery closed because of overcapacity. Only in 2013, after a complete rebuild, did it start up again. The vast majority of production goes into blends such as Chivas Regal, Passport and 100 Pipers.

From 1999 to 2013 not a drop flowed. What is left from that first period is no longer replenished.

Why are the old bottles so interesting?

Because they come from a closed chapter. Everything distilled before 1999 was made at a time when experiments were still being done here with triple distillation, other yeasts and gas-fired stills. Those casks lie with bottlers and are slowly being taken out; nothing is added. For a distillery that stood idle for fourteen years, every age above twenty-six years automatically means: from before the closure.

Frequently asked questions about Glen Keith

How many Glen Keith does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Seven bottles, all immediately available. The Distillery Edition is temporarily sold out.

Why are there so many old Glen Keiths?

Because the distillery stood idle from 1999 to 2013. Everything older than twenty-six years comes from the period before that, and that stock is not replenished.

What made Glen Keith special?

It was Seagram's test lab. It distilled three times, experimented with wheat and its own yeast strains, and made peated batches under the names Glenisla and Craigduff. In 1970 the distillery became the first in Scotland to get gas-fired stills.

Which Glen Keith should you try first?

The nine-year-old from Hart Brothers is the cheapest way in. If you want to taste the old style, the twenty-six-year-old from Signatory is the logical choice.

Where is Glen Keith?

In the town of Keith in Speyside, right behind Strathisla, the distillery that forms the basis of Chivas Regal.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Glen Keith abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
