Why here

Australian whisky of almost twenty years

Australia has only been making single malt again since the nineties, and most distilleries there are still young. Old bottles are therefore scarce. We have two: a peated single cask of eighteen years and one of nineteen years on American oak, both at over sixty percent.

In addition, four bottles from the regular range, from seventy-six euros. If you don't know which one to get, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Dairy farmers who started making whisky

  • The distillery in brief
  • 1827Henry Hellyer explores the northwest of Tasmania on foot.
  • 1997A group of dairy farmers starts the distillery at Burnie.
  • NameAfter the road that Hellyer had built at the time.
  • nowOne of the largest single malt distilleries in Australia.

Hellyers Road is near Burnie on the rugged northwest coast of Tasmania. The distillery is named after Henry Hellyer, an explorer and cartographer who mapped that area in 1827; the road named after him ran straight across the site where the distillery now stands.

The founders were not distillers but dairy farmers, united in a cooperative. Their reasoning was simple: if the water and air here are good enough for excellent milk, they are good enough for whisky. They started in 1997, at a time when Australian whisky barely existed.

Tasmanian barley is used, and the distillery has grown into one of the largest in the country. Because casks have been filled there since 1997, this is one of the few Australian houses able to offer bottles of nearly twenty years.

The whisky country Australia is young. A nineteen-year-old from Tasmania is therefore rarer than a nineteen-year-old from Scotland.

Frequently asked questions about Hellyers Road

How much Hellyers Road does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Six bottles, all available immediately: four from the core range and two single casks of eighteen and nineteen years.

Where does Hellyers Road come from?

From Burnie, on the north-west coast of Tasmania. The distillery is named after Henry Hellyer, who mapped that area in 1827.

Is it true that dairy farmers started this distillery?

Yes. A cooperative of Tasmanian dairy farmers founded it in 1997, with the idea that the water and air that produce good milk also produce good whisky.

Why is old Australian whisky special?

Because the country has only been making single malt again since the nineties. Most distilleries are young, so bottles of nearly twenty years hardly exist.

Which Hellyers Road is best to try first?

The Aurora Australis or the Double Cask. If you want the real thing, one of the single casks at well over sixty percent is the next step.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Hellyers Road abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
