Why here

A distillery you only get to know through bottlers

Teaninich releases next to nothing itself. The entire output goes to blends, including Johnnie Walker Red Label. There is one official ten-year-old bottling, and beyond that it is up to independent bottlers to show what this distillery has to say for itself.

We have eleven: from Adelphi, James Eadie, Carn Mor, Gordon & MacPhail, Golden Cask, The Firkin and Hogshead, plus a 1977 vintage of forty-five years. Almost all at cask strength. Not sure which cask suits you? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

  • 1992The only official bottling appears, in the Flora and Fauna series.
  • 2000A mash filter press is coming, the only one in the Scottish malt world.

Teaninich is near Alness in the Highlands and was built in 1817 by Hugh Munro, on his own estate. Diageo is the owner today. Almost all of the whisky goes into blends; Johnnie Walker Red Label is the best-known destination.

Technically the house is an oddity. In 2000 a mash filter press was installed, where every other Scottish malt distillery uses a mash tun. Such a filter extracts the wort more sharply from the grain, which gives a clearer mash. That is not a detail for enthusiasts only: it helps determine the character of the distillate.

Official bottlings are scarce. Since 1992 there has been a ten-year-old from the Flora and Fauna series, and now and then a Special Release from Diageo, such as the eight-year-old Daring Rye that is here. For the rest it is up to bottlers.

Frequently asked questions about Teaninich

How many Teaninich does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Thirteen different bottles, eleven of them from independent bottlers. All thirteen are available at the moment.

Why does Teaninich release so little itself?

Because the distillery distils almost entirely for blends, including Johnnie Walker Red Label. Since 1992 there has been one fixed bottling of ten years, from the Flora and Fauna series.

What is a mash filter press?

A device that separates the wort from the grain with a filter instead of a mash tun. Teaninich got one in 2000 and is therefore the only Scottish malt distillery that works this way.

Where is Teaninich?

Near Alness in the Highlands, north of Inverness. The distillery was built in 1817 by Hugh Munro and is now owned by Diageo.

What is the Daring Rye?

A Special Release from Diageo: Teaninich, eight years old, finished in casks that previously held rye whisky, bottled undiluted at 60.3 percent.
