Why here

Beer as the starting point of a single malt

Most distilleries buy in their malt and wort. Here it comes from their own brewery: the wort of Gouden Carolus Tripel goes to the still instead of to the fermentation vessel. Brewery and distillery belong to the same family, and that is exactly what makes this whisky different from a Scotch malt.

We have sixteen bottles from this house. That is more than the range of a small brand usually yields, because we have also kept the anniversary bottlings of recent years.

The bottles that are always there

Five to start with: the core single malt, two finishes, the peated one and a tasting set.

About the distillery

From jenever farm to whisky distillery

  • De Molenberg in four facts
  • 1637the Van Breedam family distils genever on the Molenberg in Blaasveld.
  • 1872the family takes over a brewery in Mechelen, now Brouwerij Het Anker.
  • 2010Charles Leclef, fifth generation, brings distilling back to the farm.
  • 2013the first bottling, after three years and a day in cask.

De Molenberg is an old miller's farm in Blaasveld, near Willebroek, about eight kilometres from Mechelen. The Van Breedam family ground and distilled grain there from 1637. In 1872 the family left for Mechelen to take over a brewery there; that brewery is called Het Anker today.

Charles Leclef, the fifth generation, had the farm converted and installed two copper stills built by the Scottish still maker Forsyths. This brought brewing and distilling together again after more than a century. In 2010 the first spirit ran from the still, and in December 2013 the first whisky went into the bottle: after three years and a day, the minimum for a product to be called whisky.

The wort comes from Gouden Carolus Tripel. The whisky matures in first fill bourbon casks and in oak casks from its own cooper, and is bottled at 46%. Since 2024 the distillery and maturation warehouse have been located on the brewery’s site in Mechelen and the distillery continues under the name Stokerij Het Anker; the bottles on our shelf still say De Molenberg.

A brewery that sends its own mash to the still: that is the whole idea behind De Molenberg.

Frequently asked questions about Stokerij De Molenberg

How many bottles from Stokerij De Molenberg does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Sixteen different bottles, and all of them are available at the moment: five that are always there, eight limited bottlings and the three bottles of the Black Canvas series.

Why does the label sometimes say Gouden Carolus and sometimes Stokerij De Molenberg?

Both belong to the same house. Gouden Carolus is the brand name the family also uses for its beers, Stokerij De Molenberg is the name of the distillery itself. In the online shop you will therefore find the bottles under two search terms. On this page they are together.

Where is this whisky made?

Distilling began in 2010 at the old family farmstead in Blaasveld, near Willebroek, with two copper stills from the Scottish coppersmith Forsyths. Since 2024 the distillery and the maturation warehouse have been brought together at the site of Brouwerij Het Anker in Mechelen and the distillery continues as Stokerij Het Anker.

What does the beer Gouden Carolus have to do with it?

The single malt is distilled from the mash of Gouden Carolus Tripel, the tripel beer from Brouwerij Het Anker. Brewery and distillery belong to the same family, and that mash is the starting point of every bottle on this page.

What is an Anniversary Edition?

An anniversary bottling with its own cask finish. The numbering follows the number of years of distilling. We have six, from the Rabelo on white port to the twelfth edition Giverny.
