Why here

From beer to whisky, literally

Brouwerij Het Anker in Mechelen brews Gouden Carolus Tripel. The wort of that same beer goes to Stokerij De Molenberg in Blaasveld, a quarter of an hour's drive away, where it is distilled into whisky. Beer and whisky thus come from the same process.

On that site in Blaasveld, jenever was already being distilled by the same family from 1637 to 1914. The whisky distillery came into use in 2010; Charles Leclef is the fifth generation.

About the method

Het Anker and De Molenberg

  • From mash to bottle
  • MechelenThe mash of Gouden Carolus Tripel.
  • BlaasveldDouble distillation in copper pot stills.
  • BourbonFirst-fill casks for the first maturation.
  • AnkerIts own casks, made to its own specification.

It is distilled twice in copper pot stills. Maturation takes place first in first-fill bourbon casks and then in its own Anker casks: oak casks made by the cooper to its own specification.

Gouden Carolus Single Malt was released on 23 November 2013, without an age statement, at 46 percent. Blaasveld Broek is the peated version, also 46 percent; the name refers to the nature reserve Het Broek next to the distillery, where peat was cut for centuries.

Not all casks are in Blaasveld. Some are in the brewery building in Mechelen, where the new make is taken.

The same mash becomes beer in Mechelen and whisky in Blaasveld.

Practical

What these bottles go with

For those who know the beer, the whisky is a logical sidestep. Try them side by side; the kinship is there, even though the road to it is very different.

In addition to the regular bottlings, one-off cask finishes regularly appear under the name Stokerij De Molenberg. Ask in the shop what is in stock at the moment.
