Why here

Nine Solists and eleven vintages

The Solist range consists of a few casks that go into the bottle undiluted. We have nine, from fino and manzanilla to moscatel and pedro ximenez, plus the two new Peatist bottles.

In addition eleven bottles with an age statement, including two fifteen-year-old anniversary casks. If you do not know which one to choose, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Maturing in the subtropics

  • Kavalan in five facts
  • 11-3-2006at half past three the first new make comes out of the stills.
  • 2008the first bottle appears.
  • 13%evaporates from the cask each year. In Scotland that is around 2%.
  • Yilanon the north-east coast of Taiwan, with water from the Xue Shan mountains.
  • 9 millionlitres of pure alcohol per year after the expansion.

Kavalan is in Yuanshan in the Yilan district, on the north-east side of Taiwan. It is part of King Car Group, founded by Lee Tien-Tsai. The first spirit ran from the stills on 11 March 2006; two years later the first bottle was in the shop.

The climate does here the work that takes thirty years in Scotland. In the upper levels of the warehouses the temperature climbs high and, according to the distillery itself, about thirteen percent per year evaporates from the cask, against around two percent in Scotland. Whisky of six years therefore tastes older here than its age.

The whisky production was set up with guidance from the late Dr. Jim Swan. After the expansion, Kavalan can make around nine million litres of pure alcohol a year, more than most Scottish distilleries.

Thirteen percent a year out of the cask: that is why a young Kavalan does not taste young.

The Solist series

Why there is no age statement

  • What a Solist is
  • Single caskevery bottle comes from one cask, not from a blend.
  • Cask strengthbottled undiluted, usually above 50 percent.
  • Cask typethe name on the label is the cask: fino, moscatel, port, vinho barrique.
  • No age statementmost Solists carry no year.

Solist is the range in which Kavalan bottles a single cask undiluted. The label shows the cask type instead of an age: fino, manzanilla, moscatel, pedro ximenez, port, vinho barrique or ex-bourbon.

Vinho Barrique refers to American oak wine casks that have been re-charred and toasted, a technique Jim Swan introduced at Kavalan and which has a great influence on the flavour here.

The Peatist bottles are the youngest addition and work with peated malt, which is unusual at Kavalan. We have two: one on oloroso and one on ex-bourbon.

The label states the cask, not the age. At Kavalan that is a deliberate choice.

Frequently asked questions about Kavalan

How much Kavalan does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Thirty-two different bottles, including nine Solists and eleven bottles with an age statement. All thirty-two are currently available.

Why does young Kavalan taste so mature?

Because of the climate. In Yilan, according to the distillery, about thirteen percent evaporates from the cask per year, compared with some two percent in Scotland. The exchange between wood and whisky therefore goes much faster.

What is a Solist?

A single cask bottled undiluted. The label shows the cask type (fino, moscatel, port, vinho barrique) instead of an age.

What does Vinho Barrique mean?

American oak wine casks that have been re-charred and toasted. That technique was introduced at Kavalan by Dr. Jim Swan.

Where does the name Kavalan come from?
