Why here

Eight vintages of 100% Islay side by side

The 100% Islay is the bottle in which everything comes from the farm itself: own barley, own floor maltings, own peat. We have the Inaugural plus the eleventh through fifteenth editions, and the sherry version. That is a line-up you rarely see together.

In addition, five vintages of Loch Gorm, ten cask finishes and a series of single casks going back to 2007. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The core range

Ten bottles available all year round.

About the distillery

A farm with a malting floor

  • Kilchoman in five facts
  • 2005Anthony and Kathy Wills start up; on 14 December the first casks are filled.
  • Rockside Farm440 acres of land in the north-west of Islay.
  • 20 ppmits own malt, about ten hours over the peat fire.
  • 50 ppmthe malt that comes from Port Ellen.
  • 4stills, called the smallest on Islay by the house itself.

Kilchoman stands on Rockside Farm near Machir Bay, in the northwest of Islay. Anthony and Kathy Wills started there in 2005; it was the first new distillery on the island in over a century. On 14 December 2005 the first casks were filled.

What sets Kilchoman apart is that the whole chain lies on the farmyard. Part of the barley grows on the farm itself and is malted on its own floor, for about ten hours over a peat fire. That yields malt of about twenty ppm. The rest of the malt comes from Port Ellen and sits at fifty ppm.

The stills are small: two wash stills of three thousand litres and two spirit stills of sixteen hundred. Since the expansion of 2019, the distillery can make around 480,000 litres per year. By Islay standards that remains modest.

From field to cask on the same estate: few distilleries on Islay can say that.

Loch Gorm

Five vintages that matured entirely in oloroso sherry casks.

100% Islay

Eight bottles in which everything comes from the farm itself.

The distillery's own barley

Why 100% Islay tastes different

  • The chain at one address
  • Own landthe barley for this series grows on Rockside Farm.
  • Own floor maltingsthe malt is turned by hand.
  • 20 ppmless heavily peated than the rest of the series.
  • 50%the bottling strength of the whole 100% Islay range.

At almost every Scottish distillery, the malt comes from a large commercial maltings. Kilchoman does the same for most of its production. But for the range called 100% Islay, everything happens on the island: the barley grows on the land around the distillery, is malted on its own floor and dried over its own peat.

That own malt is peated at around twenty ppm, lower than the fifty-ppm malt from Port Ellen. The 100% Islay is therefore not the smokiest Kilchoman, but it is the most its own. A new edition appears every year, with its own number.

We have eight of them, from the very first release up to and including the fifteenth edition. All eight at fifty percent.

A lower peat level, but the only one that comes entirely from this island.

Cask finishes

Ten bottles that matured or were finished in a special cask.

Frequently asked questions about Kilchoman

How many Kilchoman does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Fifty-four different bottles, including eight vintages of 100% Islay and five Loch Gorm releases. All fifty-four are currently available.

What is the difference between Machir Bay, Sanaig and Loch Gorm?

Machir Bay is the standard bottle, matured mainly in bourbon casks with a share of sherry. Sanaig has a higher share of oloroso sherry. Loch Gorm matures entirely in oloroso sherry casks and is at least ten years old.

What does 100% Islay mean?

All of that applies to the bottle from the island: the barley grows at Rockside Farm, is malted on the distillery's own floor and dried over its own peat. That home-grown malt sits at about twenty ppm, against fifty ppm for the malt that Kilchoman brings in from Port Ellen.

How smoky is Kilchoman?

Most of the range is made from malt at around fifty ppm, which is considerable. The 100% Islay range comes from own malt at around twenty ppm and is therefore milder.

Why is Kilchoman so special for Islay?

In 2005 it was the first new distillery on the island in over a century, and it is one of the few that grows its own barley and malts it on its own floor.
