Over Gouden Carolus
Gouden Carolus wordt gebrouwen door Brouwerij Het Anker in Mechelen, op het terrein van het Groot Begijnhof. De wortels van de brouwerij gaan terug tot de 15e eeuw, toen de begijnen er bier brouwden. In 1872 kocht Louis Van Breedam de brouwerij, die in 1904 de naam Het Anker kreeg. De familie Van Breedam-Leclef leidt het bedrijf inmiddels in de vijfde generatie.
De naam verwijst naar keizer Karel V, die in Mechelen opgroeide, en naar de gouden munt die tijdens zijn regering werd geslagen.
Het bekendste bier van Brouwerij Het Anker is de Gouden Carolus Classic, een donker bier van 8,5 procent, gebrouwen met onder meer tarwemout, karamelmout en geroosterde mout. Naast de Classic bestaan er onder meer een Tripel en een kerstbier. Elk jaar wordt op de verjaardag van Karel V de Cuvée van de Keizer gebrouwen, in een blonde en een donkere versie.
Sinds 2010 stookt Het Anker ook whisky, in een eigen stokerij in Blaasveld. Op het brouwerijterrein in Mechelen zijn verder een brasserie en een hotel gevestigd.

A tripel is golden blond, high in alcohol and dry in the finish. The name comes from the abbey breweries and refers to the amount of malt that went into the brew: the more malt, the fuller and stronger the beer. A tripel is usually around eight per cent.
What characterises a good tripel is that you do not taste that strength straight away. There is often a spicy, lightly fruity note from the yeast, and a touch of bitterness that keeps the sweetness in balance.
Do not serve it too cold, around eight degrees, and use a goblet so the aroma has room.
A tripel of eight per cent often drinks more easily than expected. So do not have too many in a row.
