Why here

A London Dry from the jenever city

London Dry is a style, not an origin. It means: no sugar added afterwards, all flavour from the distillation and only natural ingredients. That this one is made in Schiedam is therefore no contradiction: it is the city where the craft comes from.

Onder de Boompjes does an unusual amount itself: the house distils its own malt wine instead of buying it in, peels the oranges by hand and grinds the herbs on site.

About the distillery

Onder de Boompjes, Schiedam

  • The house in brief
  • 1658The starting year the distillery uses.
  • SchiedamThe genever city on the Nieuwe Maas.
  • 3xThat is how many times the wash is distilled.
  • 4 daysSoaking time of the botanicals.

Distillery Onder de Boompjes uses 1658 as its starting year and thereby calls itself the oldest independent distillery in the Netherlands. It also distils for other brands; of Juniper Bird, Gastro and Van Linschoten we also stock bottles that come from there.

The method at Sylvius: the botanicals soak for four days in neutral grain alcohol and then go through the still once. The malt wine the house makes itself is distilled three times.

The gin is named after Franciscus Sylvius, the seventeenth-century Leiden physician to whom the invention of jenever is often attributed. Historians question this (juniper distillate existed before his time), but the name has stuck.

Practical

What this bottle goes with

With 45 percent and a classic make-up, this is a gin that works well in a Martini or a dry gin and tonic, with no added flavour layered over it.

Aniseed and cinnamon are the spices that come through most clearly; they call for a neutral tonic.
