Why here

Three casks of the same whisky, undiluted

Cotswolds bottles the same spirit in three ways: fully on sherry cask, fully on bourbon cask and finished on a cask that previously held peated whisky. All three at cask strength, between 57 and 59 percent. Tasted side by side, that is one of the clearest cask comparisons you can make, precisely because the whisky is young and so the wood is easy to follow.

Alongside that, the standard bottling at 47 euros and a bottle from the Harvest Series, which states which farm the barley came from. Not sure which one you need? Just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

From currency trading to the field behind the house

  • The distillery in four moments
  • 2014Dan Szor opens the distillery near Stourton; on 22 September the first cask is closed.
  • 2014Gin is added straight away, to have income while the whisky matures.
  • 2017The first single malt appears, three years after the first cask.
  • nowFour whisky stills, built by Forsyths in Scotland.

Dan Szor worked for thirty years in the financial world, in New York, Paris and London. In 2011 he moved to the Cotswolds and saw the barley fields behind his house. In 2014 he started a distillery on a two-hectare site near the village of Stourton, the first the region has ever had.

For the set-up he brought in two people with a name in the whisky world: Harry Cockburn, former director of Bowmore, and the late Dr. Jim Swan, the cask specialist who was also involved with Annandale and Armorik. The stills come from Forsyths in Rothes, the same builder as for most Scottish distilleries.

All the barley comes from farms within a few kilometres: first the Odyssey variety, floor-malted at Warminster Maltings in Wiltshire. The bottles from the Harvest Series state which farm and which harvest the barley came from.

While the whisky lay maturing, the gin kept the business running. That is the standard solution for every new distillery: whisky may only be called that after three years.

Frequently asked questions about Cotswolds

How many Cotswolds does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Five bottles, all available for immediate delivery: the standard bottling, three cask types at full strength and a bottle from the Harvest Series.

Which Cotswolds is best to try first?

The regular Single Malt at 46 percent. Want to know what the cask does? Then buy the Sherry Cask and the Bourbon Cask side by side: same whisky, different wood, both undiluted.

Is Cotswolds peated?

Not the regular bottles. There is one bottling, however, that was finished in a cask that previously held peated whisky; it therefore has a light smoky note.

Why is this whisky young?

Because the distillery only started in 2014. Whisky must mature for at least three years to be called that, and the first single malt came out in 2017. What you buy now is therefore young whisky by definition.

What is the Harvest Series?

A series where the label states which farm and which harvest the barley came from. All the barley grows within a few kilometres of the distillery.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Cotswolds abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
