Deanston dares to do with casks what most Scottish houses leave alone. We have a fifteen-year-old finished on tequila casks, a seventeen-year-old on vino de naranja casks (Spanish orange wine) and a ten-year-old on red Bordeaux. Three finishes you will find at almost no other brand.
Alongside that the regular range from 29 euro, all at 46.3 percent, not chill-filtered and without colouring. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

A cotton mill that started making whisky
- The distillery in five moments
- 1785Richard Arkwright designs a cotton mill here on the Teith.
- 1965The factory closes; a consortium buys it to make whisky there.
- 1966The distillery opens on 17 October, after nine months of renovation.
- 1982–1990Eight years idle because of the whisky crisis.
- 2012The visitor centre opens in the old factory canteen.
Deanston lies near the village of Doune on the River Teith, some thirteen kilometres from Stirling. The building is a hundred and eighty years older than the distillery: in 1785 a cotton mill rose here, designed by Richard Arkwright, the man of the spinning frame. At its peak fifteen hundred people worked there.
When the cotton disappeared in 1965, a consortium bought the complex to make whisky. Three floors were knocked out to make room for the stills. The old weaving mill turned out to be exactly right for maturation: cool and constant in temperature all year round.
The river that once drove the water wheels still does that work. Deanston is the only distillery in Scotland that meets all its own electricity needs with a water turbine, and feeds the surplus back into the grid.
Everything here is bottled at 46.3 percent, without chill filtration and without colouring. Even the cheapest bottle.
What is a cask finish?
The whisky first matures for years in one cask, usually ex-bourbon, and then spends a further period in a second cask. At Deanston these are unusual choices: tequila, Bordeaux, orange wine. A second cask like that changes the flavour considerably, but the base remains the same distillery. Anyone who wants to know what the cask does can set three very different results side by side here.
Six cask finishes and a few casks

Frequently asked questions about Deanston
How many Deanston does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Eleven bottles, all available immediately: five from the core range, four cask finishes and two single casks from bottlers.
Which Deanston should you try first?
The 12 Years Old. It is bottled at 46.3 percent, is not chill-filtered and shows the honeyed, slightly waxy style of the house well. The Kentucky Cask is the cheapest way in.
What is special about cask finishes?
Deanston uses casks you rarely see in Scotch whisky: tequila, red Bordeaux and vino de naranja, Spanish orange wine. That results in three very different bottles with the same base.
Is it true that the distillery is located in a cotton mill?
Yes. The building dates from 1785 and was a cotton mill for a hundred and eighty years, designed by Richard Arkwright. In 1965 it was converted into a distillery; the old weaving shed is now a maturation warehouse.
Does Deanston really generate its own electricity?
Yes. With a water turbine in the Teith, the distillery fully meets its own electricity needs and supplies the surplus back to the grid. No other distillery in Scotland does that.
Does ’t Bockje also ship Deanston abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
