Why here

Four batches from the same warehouse

The Warehouse series shows what maturation in a specific warehouse does: we have three consecutive batches from warehouse 2 and one from warehouse 14, all around eighty euros and between 48.5 and 51.2 percent. Hardly anywhere else can you put such series side by side.

Alongside that, the complete age ladder of the distillery itself and seven casks from independent bottlers, including a twenty-one-year-old with a finish in Burgundy casks. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Water over the outside of the still

  • 1830The estate passes to the Gladstone family.
  • 1887A fire shuts the distillery down for years.
  • the 50sThe cooling ring on the stills is devised.
  • 1973Whyte & Mackay becomes the owner.

Fettercairn lies in Kincardineshire, at the foot of the Grampians. The name roughly means ‘foot of the mountain’. In 1824 Sir Alexander Ramsay converted a corn mill on his estate into a distillery, shortly after the Excise Act that made legal distilling possible. He was one of the landowners who had lobbied for it, and he was the first to take on the area’s illegal distillers as his stillmen.

When Ramsay lost his fortune, the estate went to the Gladstone family. His son William became prime minister of Great Britain four times and in those years pushed through precisely the laws that lowered the whisky tax and allowed whisky to be sold by the bottle.

What makes this whisky what it is is a discovery from the 1950s. The distillers found that water running over the outside of the still neck cools the copper, so that only the lightest vapours get through and the heavier ones fall back. That copper cooling ring is still there and exists nowhere else in Scotland. The result is a remarkably fruity, almost tropical whisky: pineapple, mango and banana.

The label shows a unicorn, the national animal of Scotland.

What is the Warehouse series?

Bottlings made up of casks from one specific warehouse on the site. Fettercairn has fourteen of these old-fashioned dunnage warehouses: low, with an earth floor and thick walls, where the temperature stays even all year round. Each batch has its own strength. We have three batches from warehouse 2 and one from warehouse 14.

Frequently asked questions about Fettercairn

How many Fettercairn does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Seventeen bottles, all available immediately: ten from the distillery itself and seven from independent bottlers.

Why does Fettercairn taste so fruity?

Because of the cooling ring on the stills. Cold mountain water runs over the outside of the still neck, so that only the lightest vapours come through. That gives a striking tropical style with pineapple, mango and banana. That cooling ring exists nowhere else in Scotland.

Which Fettercairn should you try first?

The 12 Years Old. If you want to go a step further, a bottle from the Warehouse series is worth a look: higher strength, and you taste what maturing in a particular warehouse does.

Is Fettercairn peated?

No. This distillery focuses entirely on unpeated whisky with a fruity character.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Fettercairn abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
