The same finish twice, two batches
We have two batches of the STR finish and two of the IPA finish. Same distillery, same type of cask, different batch. Nothing shows better how much a batch can differ at a young distillery.
That IPA finish is a joke that can only happen here: the casks come from the brewery of the same owner, four kilometres away, where the barley for the whisky is also milled. If you do not know which one to choose, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Filey Bay is the whisky of the Spirit of Yorkshire distillery in Hunmanby, between Bridlington and Filey on the North Yorkshire coast. Tom Mellor’s farm has been in the family since the 1940s; the barley grows there. It goes to Bridlington to be malted, comes back to Wold Top Brewery (also Mellor’s, four kilometres away), where it is milled and fermented, and is then distilled and matured at the distillery.
That is one of the few true field-to-bottle chains in whisky. Distilling is done on copper stills from Forsyths combined with a four-plate column still, which is rare in Great Britain. Dr. Jim Swan was involved in the set-up, the same cask specialist who also guided Annandale, Armorik and Cotswolds.
Yorkshire is one of the most important barley regions of England. That barley always went to Scotland; here it stays at home.
What is an STR cask?
STR stands for shaved, toasted, re-charred: a used wine cask whose inside is scraped off, toasted again and then charred again. That was an idea of Dr. Jim Swan, intended to give young whisky depth faster without the wood taking over. You therefore see those casks mostly at young distilleries.

Frequently asked questions about Filey Bay
How much Filey Bay does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Seven bottles, all available immediately: the Flagship and six cask finishes, including two batches of STR and two batches of IPA.
Which Filey Bay is best to try first?
The Flagship. It shows the house style most clearly: light, creamy and fruity, matured on bourbon casks. After that, the STR finish is the logical next step.
What is an STR cask?
Shaved, toasted, re-charred: a used wine cask that has been scraped out, toasted again and charred again. A method by Dr. Jim Swan that gives young whisky depth more quickly.
What is the IPA finish?
A finish in casks that previously held IPA beer, from Wold Top Brewery, the brewery of the same owner, four kilometres from the distillery.
Does the barley really come from their own land?
Yes. All the barley is grown on the family farm in Hunmanby. Malting takes place in Bridlington, milling and fermenting in the company's own brewery, distilling and maturing at the distillery.
Does ’t Bockje also ship Filey Bay abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
