Why here

The recipe, plus the six casks separately

From a young distillery you usually see one bottle in the Netherlands: the core bottling. With Raasay we have nine, and most of them are single casks from the Na Sia series: the casks the core recipe is built from, bottled here individually at cask strength.

In addition there is the standard bottling itself, the whisky the house had bottled while its own distillate was still maturing, and two single bottlings from the distillery. If you do not know which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

The first legal distillery on Raasay

  • Raasay in five facts
  • 2013Bill Dobbie and Alasdair Day meet and start R&B Distillers.
  • 2016the building permit for Borodale House is falling into place.
  • 14-9-2017the day spirit first runs through the plant.
  • 2021the first Isle of Raasay Single Malt comes on the market.
  • 161inhabitants live on the island; the distillery employs well over 25 of them.

Raasay lies between Skye and the Scottish mainland and has 161 inhabitants. The distillery is housed in Borodale House, a nineteenth-century building that was previously a hotel. On 14 September 2017 spirit ran through the installation for the first time. It is the first legal distillery the island has had, and it now employs well over twenty-five people there.

The core recipe is unusual. Isle of Raasay Single Malt is built from six cask types: an American rye cask, new chinkapin oak and a red Bordeaux cask, each in a peated and an unpeated version. That is where the name of the separate range comes from: na sia is Gaelic for the six.

Those six components are also sold separately, as Na Sia Single Cask. That way you can put the building blocks of the recipe side by side. The water comes from an old spring on the grounds and has a high mineral content because of the volcanic rock and the sandstone of the island.

Six casks in one bottle, and the same six also available separately.

The Na Sia casks

Four single casks from the recipe, all four at cask strength of around sixty-one percent.

Frequently asked questions about Isle of Raasay

How much Isle of Raasay does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Nine different bottles, four of which come from the Na Sia series of single casks. All nine are currently available.

What does Na Sia mean?

Na sia is Gaelic for the six. The standard recipe of Isle of Raasay is built from six cask types: rye, chinkapin oak and red Bordeaux, each peated and unpeated. In the Na Sia range these six components are bottled separately.

Where is Raasay?

Between Skye and the Scottish mainland. The island has 161 inhabitants. Since 2017 the distillery has been housed in Borodale House, a nineteenth-century building that used to be a hotel, and it is the first legal distillery Raasay has had.

Is Raasay peated?

Partly. The standard recipe combines peated and unpeated distillate. In addition there are single bottlings that are fully peated; those are listed separately above.

What is While We Wait?

A series that R&B Distillers had bottled in the years when its own distillate was still maturing. That whisky was therefore not distilled on Raasay.
