What is best depends on you
Between twenty and thirty euros, something changes. Single malts join in, Irish whiskeys join in, and so do bottles from distilleries you do not know from advertising. Which of them is the best cannot be said, because that depends on whether you like smoke and whether you drink it neat. What can be said is what is on the shelf, and that is listed below.

How to choose without gambling
In this corner the choice between regions matters more than the choice between brands. Speyside and the Lowlands deliver soft, round whisky; Islay delivers smoke; the Highlands lie in between and vary the most. If you do not know where the recipient or you yourself will end up, Speyside is the safest corner. If you want something that stands out, go for an Irish one: those are often triple distilled and therefore softer than you would expect at this price.

Which single malt can you buy for less than 30 euros?

What is the difference between a blend and a single malt?
A single malt comes from malted barley from one distillery. A blend is a mixture of malt and grain whisky from several distilleries, put together to taste the same every year. That is a craft in itself and not a lesser whisky; it is a different aim. A single malt shows the individual style of a place, a blend shows a consistent taste.
Is a whisky without an age statement on the label any less good?
Not necessarily. An age on the label refers to the youngest drop in the bottle, so a whisky without an age statement may well contain old whisky. What a bottle without an age does mean is that the distillery can blend more freely. There are excellent bottles without an age statement and disappointing ones with.
Can I taste before I buy?
The shop has a tasting cabinet with open bottles. What is in it changes, so please call ahead if you are coming for something in particular.
