What is best depends on you
What is added between forty and sixty euros is not so much age as the way of bottling. More bottles go into the bottle at their own strength here, more bottles are not chill-filtered, and independent bottlers appear who release a single cask under their own name. Those are not quality marks, but they are choices you can taste.

An age on the label means that the youngest drop in the bottle is that old. It says nothing about the flavour, but it does say something about the time spent on wood.

Bottled at a higher strength generally means unfiltered and more flavor per sip. You can add water yourself; the other way around is not possible.

How to choose without gambling
If you drink it neat, a higher strength in this corner is worth the most for your money: you can add water yourself and so find out where the bottle opens up best. The other way round is not possible. If you drink it with ice or soft drink, a higher strength is wasted money and you are better off choosing by age or region. And if you want something nobody else has: take a look at the special bottlings below; once they are gone, the cask is empty.

What do you get for sixty euros that you don't get for forty?
Vooral meer flessen die op hun eigen sterkte gebotteld zijn en meer flessen van onafhankelijke bottelaars. In deze hoek staan 71 flessen, waarvan 17 op zesenveertig procent of hoger. Meer leeftijd hoeft het niet te betekenen: daarvoor moet u doorgaans verder omhoog.
What does cask strength mean?
That the whisky goes into the bottle at the strength it had in the cask, without dilution with water. That is usually between fifty and sixty percent. You taste more, and you can decide for yourself how much water to add. A drop or two is often enough to make a bottle open up completely.
What is non-chill-filtered whisky?
Whisky is often chilled hard and filtered so that it does not turn cloudy when ice is added. That filtering also removes flavour compounds. If a bottler skips that step, the label says not chill-filtered. The bottle may then turn slightly cloudy with ice; that is not a flaw, but the opposite.
Can I taste before I buy?
The shop has a tasting cabinet with open bottles. What is in it changes, so please call ahead if you are coming for something in particular.
