How to choose without gambling
If you are buying for yourself, drop the question of which bottle is best and ask which corner you do not know yet. Anyone who always drinks Speyside and has never tried an Irish one gets more pleasure from this price class than from the next. If you are buying it as a gift, choose for certainty: a twelve-year-old from Speyside or the Highlands goes down well with almost everyone, and the packaging at this amount is usually such that nothing more is needed.

What can you buy for forty euros?
Ruime keuze: 54 flessen van 33 merken, waarvan 8 met een leeftijd van twaalf jaar of ouder en 12 op zesenveertig procent of hoger. Het zwaartepunt ligt bij Schotse single malt, maar Ierland en de Verenigde Staten zijn goed vertegenwoordigd.
Why do fewer and fewer bottles carry an age statement?
Because demand for whisky is growing faster than the stock of old casks. A distillery that wants to sell more now cannot go back twelve years in time, so it leaves off the age statement and blends for taste instead of age. Whether that is worse depends on the bottle, not on the label.

The shop has a tasting cabinet with open bottles. What is in it changes, so please call ahead if you are coming for something in particular.
