Whoever can go up to two hundred euros no longer chooses on what he can pay but on what he is looking for: a particular distillery, a particular cask, a particular year. The classification below helps with that, but the conversation in the shop helps more. For this amount we are happy to walk you along the shelves.

Special bottlings 6 bottles

Bottles from independent bottlers. They buy a single cask from a distillery and bottle it under their own name, often in a few hundred bottles and usually as a one-off. When a cask is finished, that bottle does not come back, not even with us.

Twaalf jaar of ouder 17 flessen

An age on the label means that the youngest drop in the bottle is that old. It says nothing about the flavour, but it does say something about the time spent on wood.

Forty-six percent or higher 22 bottles

Bottled at a higher strength generally means unfiltered and more flavor per sip. You can add water yourself; the other way around is not possible.

How to choose without gambling

Three things determine the price in this corner, and none of them is taste. Age is the clearest: every year in wood, whisky evaporates from the cask, and that evaporation is in the price. Run size is the second: a bottling of three hundred bottles costs more than one of thirty thousand, even if they are equally good. And the third is name. If you know that, you can consciously choose what you are paying for. If you are looking for something you do not see on the list, just ask: what we do not have on the shelf we can often find.

What makes a two-hundred-euro whisky different?

Vooral leeftijd en oplage. In deze hoek staan 90 flessen van 52 merken, waarvan 17 van twaalf jaar of ouder. Een fles van dit bedrag is doorgaans langer gerijpt, in kleinere aantallen gebotteld, of allebei.

What does edition size mean for whisky?

The number of bottles made of a bottling. For a single cask that is often between two hundred and six hundred; for a fixed bottle in the range it runs to tens of thousands. A small run is no guarantee of quality, but it is the reason a bottle disappears and does not come back.

Can ’t Bockje find a bottle that is not in stock?

Can I taste before I buy?

The shop has a tasting cabinet with open bottles. What is in it changes, so please call ahead if you are coming for something in particular.
