What the best whisky under fifty euros is depends on what you like. Someone who loves smoke and someone who cannot stand it will end up with a different bottle, and neither of them is wrong. That is why below you will find no top ten, but the shelf itself: by region, by age and by strength, so that you can choose based on what you already know.

How to choose without gambling
Two questions will almost always lead you to the right bottle. The first: smoke or no smoke. Smoky Islay whisky is, for those who love it, the finest there is for the money, and for those who don’t, money wasted. The second: neat or with a splash of water. If you drink it neat, a higher strength helps, as it gives more flavour per sip; if you add water, any bottle will do. If you know the answer to neither, choose something from Speyside or the Highlands: soft, round, and rarely wrong.

Is a more expensive whisky always better?
No. Above a certain amount you mainly pay for rarity, for age and for the size of the run, and those three say nothing about whether you like the taste. There are bottles at thirty euros that score higher at a tasting than bottles at a hundred. What a higher price does more often bring is a higher bottling strength and no coloring.
Whisky or whiskey: does that spelling matter?
Not for the price. It is a spelling: in Scotland, Japan and Canada it is written whisky, in Ireland and the United States usually whiskey. If you search for whiskey under 50 euros, these are the same bottles; on this shelf they are mixed together.
