Alsace wine by grape, plus two sparkling wines
Alsace is the only French region where the grape is simply on the label. That makes choosing easy: riesling for dry and fresh, pinot gris for something fuller, gewurztraminer for distinctly aromatic. We have all three from the same house, plus pinot blanc and even a red.
There are also two crémants, from a family that introduced this type of wine in Alsace. Not sure which one to choose? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.
Six wines, six characters
In Alsace you choose by grape, not by region.

- 1913Introduction of the slender bottle shape that now belongs with Alsace wine.
- 1976Crémant d’Alsace becomes a recognised designation of origin.
Riquewihr is one of the prettiest villages on the Alsace wine route, and the Dopff family has belonged there since 1574, first as coopers, later as winemakers. The house has well over seventy hectares, mostly around the village.
Two things that changed the whole region come from here. In 1900, at the world exhibition in Paris, Julien Dopff saw a demonstration of the champagne method, trained in Champagne and then made the first sparkling wine of Alsace. That became what we now call crémant d’Alsace.
And the slender, tall bottle by which everyone recognises Alsace wine? He introduced it in 1913. At first that met with resistance; by now it is the standard for the whole region.
The house lies at the foot of the Schoenenbourg, a slope that has been regarded as one of the best in Alsace since the Middle Ages.
Why is the grape on the label here, though?
In the rest of France, the region determines the name: Burgundy, Bordeaux, Chablis. Alsace is the exception: there the bottle simply says riesling, pinot gris or gewurztraminer. That is due to the German influence in the region, which for centuries has passed back and forth between France and Germany. For the buyer that is pleasant: you know straight away what you will get in the glass.

Frequently asked questions about Dopff au Moulin
How many Dopff au Moulin does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Twelve wines, from 9.99 to 39.99 euros.
Why does Alsace wine have the grape on the label?
Alsace is the exception in France, owing to the German influence in the region. Elsewhere the region name determines the label; here it simply says riesling, pinot gris or gewurztraminer on the bottle.
What is crémant d’Alsace?
Sparkling wine from Alsace, made in the same way as champagne. Julien Dopff of this house made the first, after seeing a demonstration of the champagne method in Paris in 1900.
Is it true that this house invented the Alsatian bottle?
Yes. Julien Dopff introduced the slim, tall bottle shape in 1913 that has since become the standard for the whole region.
Which grape should you choose?
Riesling for dry and fresh, pinot gris for slightly fuller and rounder, gewurztraminer for distinctly aromatic with lychee and roses. With spicy Asian food, gewurztraminer works particularly well.
What is the Schoenenbourg?
A famous slope near Riquewihr that has been regarded since the Middle Ages as one of the best vineyards of Alsace. The riesling that comes from there is on this page.
Does ’t Bockje also ship these wines abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
