In Bordeaux petit verdot is the fifth grape, after cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and malbec. It ripens late and does not always succeed in cool years, so its share usually stays small.
What it contributes is unmistakable: deep colour, firm tannin and aromas of violet, liquorice and black pepper. A few percent in the blend is enough to notice the difference.
In warmer regions such as Spain, Australia and California, petit verdot does ripen every year. There it is also bottled as a single varietal wine: dark, spicy and of strong structure.
