Why here

Why you find tempranillos here

We keep one of the widest drinks ranges in the Netherlands, in a family business on the Brink in Bathmen. For tempranillos that means not three or four choices but 43.

With tempranillo, the ageing designation often says more than the grape itself. We keep several ageing styles side by side, from young and fruity to long on oak, so that you can choose how much wood you want in the glass.

Not sure which one you need? Call 0570 541 278 or email info@bockje.nl. Tell us what you normally drink, and we will work it out together.

The name comes from temprano, early: the grape ripens early in the season. Rioja and Ribera del Duero are the best-known areas; in Portugal the same grape is called tinta roriz or aragonês.

Young, tempranillo tastes of cherry and plum. Ageing in American oak (the classic choice in Rioja) adds vanilla, coconut and dill; French oak gives a finer, spicier tone.

On Spanish labels it says how long the wine has matured. Crianza, reserva and gran reserva go from short to long, with more and more time in cask and then in bottle. Joven or sin crianza means the wine has hardly seen any wood.
